Is this right?

Here we are on a forum.
Lots of info to share and talk about.
I'm a member of a few different forums, and this one is very different to them all.

Is it right that a forum for Garmin products is designed and run by Garmin themselves? Do you think that some of our contributors are Garmin employees fishing for info?

Why is there not a section to ask questions about the forum particularly, without going to Garmin Support?

Who are the Moderators and Admin? Are they Garmin employees too?

It all feels and sounds very fishy, or am I missing something?
  • Sorry, can't see any problem with any company wanting to better understand what users are doing or not doing with their products.

If you don't like being cheap labour, sign off.

Personally I like the idea of users contributing to product improvement.

A forum is supposed to be an interactive website for like-minded people. A open public forum is not the best way of doing R+D for a major product.

That's my opinion, and it seems like I'm on my own.

I am a member of the Ascent forum http://montebellosoftware.com/ascent_forum/? you will find me as "Mick F" on there. The Ascent forum is for a single product and R+D for it too, but the owner is a 'one man band' and the software costs peanuts. Garmin, on the other hand, are a multi-million dollar company.

As for "signing off", I probably won't as yet, but I will finish this thread off, as I'm getting nowhere. Perhaps I'm not stating my case well enough.

    Oh well.
    Regards to all,
    Mick.

I think the main reason this forum seems "different" is that there isn't much to say. There are no add-ons. People are not looking for ideas for development. The units basically do what they do. The complaints have been voiced. There are so many different units that there isn't a central forum that stays populated. Water cooler is a sub of connect. Quite frankly, many people here are plain dry. It's just what it is.

Add to that the fact that TC is too basic leading to most people using second party software, and the population gets thinned even more.

So, in a way, I get what you are saying. I myself feel that Garmin is missing the boat with this forum. They need to take it to the next level. Instead of using it as simply a technical forum, they could generate interest in their products by using the forum in a more inviting way.

Hey, how many Garmin techs does it take to throw a party? Wait, what's a party?

    Yes, you're right! Definitely!
This forum can be awfully boring.

I hope to bring a bit of life into it!

    Thanks for backing me up.
    Regards,
    Mick.

You need to have something meaningful to say to do that.

    Meaningful?
I'll give it some thought, but wait a day or so, busy today!

My main problem is that my new and wonderful Edge 705 isn't as wonderful as it should be. I'm having some issues with reliability - not in its operation, it works fine, it's just when connected to my computer for saving and uploads.

I'm in the process of testing, and will get back to the forum when I have some meaningful results.

    Ta Ta for now,
    Mick.
