Wing Foiling as an activity type

Hello,

The world is progressing, and we need new activity types, or it will create a complete mess.

Wing Foiling is now commonly logged under Windsurfing, and it is a completely different sport. As I participate in windsurfing, wingfoiling, pump foiling, and kitesurfing, I have to log them under the same category, which is not ideal. Difficult to track races, personal performance, etc.

Is there any prospect of Garmin adding Wing Foiling as a separate water sports category?

  • You can duplicate the original activity, add a unique identifier to the name, and then search by the name. I use this for a couple of one-off things, and while it's not ideal, it's functional.

It's hard to guess if they'll add low-market sports like this, sure looks like fun though, if I were a bit younger I'd give it a go (already have too many things that are tough on me these days, done a bit of windsurfing ,way back, fun times... Grin).

    This is a decent solution.

I would like to add that for it to work, a setting needs to be changed in Connect so that the activity name in Connect incorporates the name of the activity profile on the device.

    1. Open connect.garmin.com and sign in

    2. Click on profile pic (upper right) > Account Settings > Display Preferences or use this link: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/settings/displayPreferences

    3. Change the Activity Name dropdown to Location & Device Activity Name

  • Yeah, I did it in reverse, creating the activity (I use a base Cardio to track stuff like PT and other) first on my device and then sorting it in Connect, afterwards, but either way works.  It's not quite as handy as if it were a built-in category, but it's pretty functional.

Not sure if you got my comment. I wasn't suggesting reversing the order of doing anything, or even using a different workaround.

I'm saying that your suggestion of creating a custom activity profile on the device with the name you want is a good solution, but it won't do anything at all in Connect unless you change the following setting:

Account Settings > Display Preferences > Activity Name has to be changed to Location & Device Activity Name

Changing that setting will cause the activity in Connect to be named after the activity profile name on the device [and the activity location], for activities that are synced in the future. (There's no effect on existing activities)

This will affect the name of the activities in both the Connect website and the Connect app, and even in any 3rd party services that sync with Connect and retrieve the Connect activity name [like runalyze, but not strava]

If you don't do this, I'm fairly sure the default behaviour is for the Connect activity to be named after the activity sport type [e.g. in your case, Cardio] or the name of the structured workout (if applicable), but not the activity profile name.

If your Activity Name setting isn't "Location & Device Activity Name" (it's something else by default), then you can search for your custom profile name all you want in Connect, you'll never find any activities. In your specific case, you must have either changed the setting a long time ago, or maybe it used to have a different default.

    To be clear:

The name of the activity in Connect is generated in Connect at the time the activity is synced, and it's controlled by the setting I mentioned above. It's not generated on the device.

Let's say you have the following 2 activity profiles on your watch:

    - Built-in Cardio activity

    - Copy of built-in Cardio activity but you renamed it PT

And let's say you sync 1 activity from each profile to Connect

    1) Default behaviour of Connect: both activities will be named "[Location] - Cardio" (or after the name of the structured workout, if applicable).

Ofc since the Cardio profile typically doesn't have GPS enabled, both activities will probably just be named "Cardio"

To clear: the default behaviour of Connect is that your custom activity profile is completely useless for the purpose of searching because the name in Connect will just be the sport type (Cardio) and not the device activity profile name (PT)

    2) Behaviour of Connect if you change the setting as suggested above.

Each activity will be named after the profile on the device:

    [Location] - Cardio or Cardio

    [Location] - PT or PT

Unless the default setting for Display Preferences > Activity Name has changed at some point, you probably would've had to change it, in order for your workaround to work. For a new account, the default setting for Activity Name is "Workout Name (When Available), which again is:

    - the structured workout name, when applicable

    or

    - the activity profile sport type, not the activity profile name
