how to track live the elevation gain on garmin forerunner 245?

I can not find any setting to see the total elevation gain live on my watch. It is weird because there is a trail running mode but the elevation can be tracked only live on the screen, not as total elevation gain. how is this possible? do I need to calculate every metre that I gained while running? I mean, it is really weird. Is there anyone that can see the total gain on the watch during the activity?

Thanks a lot.

  • The FR245 lacks a barometric altimeter, so Garmin uses GPS elevation in this case.

But Garmin knows that GPS elevation is inaccurate, so:

    - most elevation-related data fields are hidden on the watch

    - when the activity is synced to Connect, elevation corrections are automatically applied. (These corrections are not applied to watches that have a baro)

If you really want to see Garmin's idea of total elevation gain during an activity, based on GPS elevation, you can use my Connect IQ data field Total Ascent.

It's literally my most badly-reviewed app, because people aren't happy with the data that it shows despite:

    - the fact that my data field only shows the elevation gain that Garmin reports (and records) internally (based on GPS elevation)

    - I tried to make that fact clear in the app description

    - the only reason I made that data field was because people kept asking to see elevation gain on watches without a baro
