Cannot delete tracks from Oregon 550

Hi all.
My Oregon 550 unit does not allow me to delete tracks that were imported via mapsource.
I own an etex vista, a nuvi 760, and now my new oregon 550.
I have been collecting in mapsource all my data since many years, and when I recieved my new oregon I transfered all data to it, i.e., about 150 waipoints and 340 tracks.
When I booted up my oregon, I found in Track Manager that many tracks seems to be duplicated (same name twice, in two consecutive rows).
I started deleting them all.
The tracks that were not duplicated were deleted ok.
For each duplicated track, I was able to delete one of the copies, but not the other.
The problem is:
You can enter into the track selecting its name.
Then, any button you try to select (view map, elevation plot, ..., delete) does nothing.
It remains "selected" in blue color, but nothing....
The only thing working is returning to the track list.
My track list is about 12 screens of 5 entries each, that cannot be deleted.

I have applied the new software version 3.10 and tried installing the new BaseCamp software, as of today, version 2.0.9, but those tracks are not seen, as if they do not exist.
Waypoints are seen ok.

I have searched all gpx files in my device, but none contain all these offending tracks.

Can anyone advise on this issue?
TIA.
  • Hi Alanwe,

I had the same problem as you and I could settle this way.
Copy all files from the GPS directory Garmin\GPX on your hard disk including the subdirectory CURRENT
On your GPS, delete all files in GPX and all files in the subdirectory CURRENT
Unplug the GPS and start it.
You have nothing left in the Track Manager.
Close the GPS and connect it to the computer.
Copy all files from the hard drive to the GPS GARMIN\GPX directory and the files on the CURRENT sub directory.
Unplug the GPS and start it.
You should be back in good condition

Thanks from me also..also worked perfect for my Oregon 300.
  • Thanks for the tip... worked for me as well.

I just wanted to add that in some cases you may have to empty the Recycling bin to keep the Oregon from restoring the deleted files.

I find it a bit annoying that one has to resort to this work around to delete all tracks. I had the Etrex Vista before this and it has the option of allowing the user to delete ALL tracks at once. They need to put this option back into the Oregon.

    How does this work?

I had a similar problem except I did not have any duplicates. This procedure worked for me also. Could you explain the logic behind this procedure? I think I could better manage things if I understood what files were for what and what turning it off and restarting it did.

Fixed my problem, as well. Why doesn't Garmin fix this

This fixed my problem, too. I had over five (5!) occurrences of some tracks. It had happened with dozens and dozens of waypoints, as well. I went in and deleted each of those individually. (Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon...)
And until I found this forum, I had spent hours and hours trying to delete the extraneous tracks. However, my Oregon 450 would just lock up.
There's no telling how many others this is happening to. Whoo-boy!
    Why doesn't Garmin fix this?

I had the same problem, downloaded some tracks then loaded via MapSource into my Oregon 300. They wouldn't load and I couldn't delete them - similar to other posters. However, based on the info here, I looked and found a temp.gpx file which I deleted and all the tracks went away.

Could anyone help me delete about 300 waypoints off my Dakota 20?
  • Same issue here with the 550, will try the fix posted. Thanks :)

... 5 minutes later (edit). BRILLIANT! Worked like a charm! Would still be nice for Garmin to fix this little bug?
