Double Recording for Vitality

We have Vitality health insurance at work and can earn points and rewards on their app. I do most of my running & riding on Zwift but because they have no commercial agreement Zwift activities aren't eligible for Vitality points. I therefore double record my activities via a Garmin Edge (cycling) and Garmin watch (running) and these give me Vitality points.

My question is, once the Vitality points appear on their app, can I safely delete one of the activities from Garmin Connect without there being any implications?

  • I think it should be fine.

Training metrics like training status, training load, training readiness are calculated on the Garmin device itself, so deleting activities from Connect should have no impact. Deleting activities from the Garmin device doesn't change those things either.

  • TBH, since you already record the activities with Garmin devices, a cleaner and safer solution (that many Garmin users chose) would be disconnecting Zwift from Connect (using it just standalone), and keeping only the originals from your Garmin watch or Edge. There is nothing in the Zwift data that would be missing - the virtual map and elevation profile are useless for any Garmin's metrics. The HR, speed, cadence, and power is all is needed for calculating all fitness data.

By deleting the original files, you'd lose for example some challenges and badges (Zwift activities do not count towards them). And by double recording, there is a risk of elevated Training Load and derived metrics (though the bug causing it, might have been already fixed). Also, there are often problems with HR Zones, not being properly respected at activities from 3rd party apps. In the past there were many other issues with double recording, some got fixed, others reappear up and then, and when Garmin changes or adds some functionality, it isn't necessarily quickly implemented at 3rd party apps. Because of all of this, I rather recommend keeping Garmin's native activities, and not syncing Zwift data to Connect at all.
