Problem with HR Zones web and app

How can I set heart rate zones on the website? I'm doing exactly as described in the Garmin guide, and there are no such options. The problem is that when I set the heart rate zones in the app and they match on the watch, they appear different on the website. For example, the watch has two zones, but the website has three. (The heart rate zones only appear when I create a workout and set a goal.)

  • Hmm interesting find.

You are correct that modern Garmin devices (like FR955) force you to set HR zones on the device itself or in the Connect app (which sets them on the device itself using "real time settings"). Older Garmins would let you set HR zones on the Connect website.

Because of this, it seems that the Connect website doesn't know what your zones are.

However, looking into the problem, I found that even though the Connect website workout may show a range for each zone in the drop down (e.g. "Zone 5 (182-197 bpm)", the HR range itself is not stored in the workout, only the zone number.

This can be seen in a couple of ways:

    - Look at the workout in the Connect app (only the zone number is shown, not the range)

    - Use the Chrome extension called Share your Garmin Connect Workout to download your workout and open it in a text editor. (I recommend VS Code, so you can use CTRL-SHIFT-P > "Format Document" to make it readable.)

So if it's a matter of the ranges being wrong on the Connect website, that's just a display problem.

It does point to an oversight on Garmin's part :/ Ideally the Connect website should be just like the Connect app, and only show HR zone numbers in the workout builder, not ranges.

Btw I use an FR955 now and like you, I cannot set HR zones on the website. However, I used to use an FR935 which did let you set zones on the website. Now when I set an HR Zone target in a workout on the website, it shows my zones that were set for that device. Obviously changing my zones on my FR955 doesn't affect the zones in the workout.

But changing zones in the Connect website for my old FR935 doesn't do anything either. I didn't dive into this too deeply, but I'm gonna guess there isn't anything I can do to change the zone ranges that are displayed in workouts on the Connect website. But again I don't think it matters, since the ranges are only for display purposes.

For example, the watch has two zones, but the website has three. (The heart rate zones only appear when I create a workout and set a goal.)

Given that only the zone number is stored, this wouldn't be a problem unless you select the 3rd zone in the website. It seems that you would never be able to achieve that target.

However, I'm a little confused how you set any number of HR zones other than 5?

My Forerunner 955 doesn't have this option afaik.

  • I could adjust it somehow. In the phone app, after selecting the device -> user profile -> Heart rate and power zones -> heart rate - zones (and these are probably general), when I set these zones and then selected the zones for each sport and set them the same, the zones also started being displayed correctly on the website.
