aviation GPS Garmin 496

Hi, I am new on this forum.
can someone inform me if a Garmin 496 purchased in US will work in Europe? I
I know it doesn't have the aviation database for Europe which costs $49.95 (theJeppesen database come in three packs, one is America, second is Atlantic which in fact is Europe and third is Pacific which is roughly the rest of the world) I could buy the Atlantic bit and download but a friend is warning me that a GPS purchased in US may not have Europe's maps and therefore if I buy aJeppesen database for Europe it will not be usable.
I don't see where to get maps for a Garmin 496 (for aviation use)
can anyone advise?
thanks
Martin

I'm pretty certain it will work once you have loaded up your maps & data base, just check you are still saving cash on the deal. I've just got the aera 500 and to be honest its got everything the 496 has thats available in the UK and it's £600. in the UK must be even cheaper in the US
