Why is "best pace" slower than "average pace" ?

My runs on a 310XT show a slower "best pace" than "average pace"

Avg Pace:
05:24 min/km
Best Pace:
06:49 min/km

Surely this is a bug? I think "best" is taking the maximum, and the fact that pace and speed are treated somewhat ambiguously, means what we end up with here is "maximum time per km", i.e. "worst" !
  • What shows up in GTC and/or GC?

Is it possible (please don't take offence) that you are looking at the data on the device wrong?

I must admit that I tend not to look at the data on my 310 so don't know how it appears. I'll do that after the run tomorrow. I do know, that it comes out right on GTC and GC

Why is "best pace" slower than "average pace" ?

(No offence taken, I'm new to Garmin and am still learning how to use the 310XT ;-)

The numbers I posted in my original post were from GC. The 310XT doesn't (AFAIK) display avg and "best" pace.

Maybe my point was clearly enough stated. How can the "best" pace be slower than the "average"pace ?
  • Simple answer is can't be. Best pace will always be faster than average pace for obvious mathematical reasons. If any display is showing anything else, there's a problem somewhere.

And maybe I've not been looking at it 'properly' on GC :o

Are you using a foot pod?

    I have a Forerunner 405CX.
When running with the foot pod "enabled" and with GPS "on", the maximum speed (or pace) varies with the foot pod [and the calibration factor], where the average speed (or pace) is calculated via GPS recordings.

This can result in maximum speed lower than average speed.

    Hi all,

Showed this to one of the engineers. Looks like it's an issue with the device. The FR310 team will get it resolved ASAP.

    Hi,

Is this issue resolved? I'm having the same issue, and I believe that I'm using the newest firmware available..

Check out spilts 14-17 for instance... Rather strange...

I have this issue. Using a Forerunner 235.

(On another note, why don't these posts have dates?)

Could you share the activity and post the link here?

They do. See the small gray text right to the user name at each respective post, for the elapsed time. Move the mouse cursor over it, to see the exact date and time in the tooltip.

I'm having a slightly different issue in that my best pace on my run tonight is slower than the pace of one of the segments. I did a fartlek so the segment was quite a bit quicker and only about a minute long. I'm using a  FR230.
