New bug in FIT files: empty File ID and no Record messages

At www.fitfileviewer.com, I received many similar corrupted FIT files in the past weeks. I have not seen this type of corruption before, so I assume it is a bug in a recent software update on some devices. Typical for this corruption is:

  • There is a file_id messages, but all values are invalid
  • Many messages are missing, most notably the record messages, but also event, device_info etc.. Summary messages, like activity, session and lap are there.
  • In several cases, but not always, many messages are duplicates, e.g. there are two identical activity messages, each lap and session appears twice.

FIT File Viewer can now fix these files, i.e. make it possible to import them in Garmin Connect, but of course it cannot restore the missing data.

I have seen this happening on FR 255, 955 and 965, and also in these threads:

  • I don't know what are your answers, but based on what mine are, I don't think their hunch is to the right direction :( I never used Pace Pro, nor ever used course navigation. And I think it happened to me not only in Run activities (not 100% sure, but I remember that one day I had 3 bad activities)

  • I don't use pace pro, it's only running, it's when I use courses with an upload from my phone woman shrugging: light skin tone

  • Thanks  for the tool.

I’m experiencing this issue again with my Fenix 8. My watch was previously replaced due to the same problem, but it has reoccurred. I’ve updated the watch to the latest software version (21.25), and it happened again today. The activity data and stats are visible on the watch, but the issue appears to be related specifically to the map.

I previously used the Forerunner 245 for four years and never encountered this issue. It’s extremely disappointing that after spending so much money on a premium device, the activity stats are still failing to save properly.

  • I've had this with both when Pace Pro and not using Pace Pro, and runs with and without courses.

I've had this on a cycling activity too.

  • At least in regards to runs using course navigation getting corrupted, support told me they’re aware of this bug and are targeting a software update to fix it soon.

  • Let's see how it goes. Either it's bad, because they will close the case (not even sure they acknowledged this bug...) and then they'll never fix this, or we might be lucky, and maybe it will fix the general bug too.

  • This is what happens when you let the Garmin customer support send you someone else's broken watch :( Even if they would've sent you a new one it wouldn't help, but now you can only hope that you didn't get one with an even greater problem...

  • So I had this issue a few weeks ago on my FR970. Happened on and off for a few weeks. Reported it to them. During the back and forth about this issue, the entire watch just died. Wouldn't turn on. They confirmed it was dead, I sent it in and they sent out brand new unit. Not even a week later, it's doing the same thing with corrupt activities. Garmin has gone to absolute shite. Will be trying to get my money back. I'm over it.

  • I had the same issue on my Fenix 8 on 21.25.

Paused ("Resume Later") and restarted an 8h activity twice during that time (we were in a hut) and back down at the car i saved the acitivity and it was not showing any stats.

I opened it on my laptop and saw a file with a different name than the others (random numbers and letzers instead of acticity date) and "repaired it" (most of the data was gone) with fitfileviewer.

    God damn Garmin fix that!

  • We are happy to look into this concern. Since this involves multiple devices, please post under the product forum that matches the watch/device you are using. Thank you!
