Mountain biking activity

Hello,

I've had a problem for years and today I decided to post it here. I only do mountain biking, so I created a mountain biking activity on my Vivoactive HR, but despite this, all my rides are classified as ‘cycling’ after synchronisation, not mountain biking. I have to change the activity type every time. It's not a big deal, but it's still annoying.

I've read here and there that you have to add equipment and designate it for an activity, but when I add my bike, I don't see mountain biking among the activities offered. There's only cycling, walking, running, golf, other...

Thank you.

You cannot create an activity type that is not supported by your watch. You either have to use a Connect IQ app, or get a watch (or Edge computer) that supports it natively.

As for the gear assignent - if you tell that your watch only supports the standard Cycling, and saves your MTB activities as such, then just assign you bike to Cycling. Garmin currently does not offer any finer assignment than that anyway.

  • Okay, I don't know how I managed to create a mountain biking activity if the device doesn't support it. I'll switch to the MTB App.

    Thanks for the info.

  • It sounds like you created a custom activity profile named "mountain biking" (or something similar) that's based on the standard cycling profile, not an activity with the mountain biking type. You can name a custom activity profile anything you want (it's just free text), but it has no effect on the activity type (which is a predefined category). In your case you basically have a copy of the standard cycling profile, but with a different name and independent settings.

If it helps, you can at least have the profile name displayed in Connect for new activities.

    1) open connect.garmin.com in a browser (e.g. chrome or firefox)

    2) sign in

    3) click your profile pic in the upper right hand corner

    4) select Account Settings > Display Preferences

    5) change the "Activity Name" setting to "Location and Device Activity Name"

At least all new activities created by that profile will be named "[your location] - Mountain Biking", and it will be easy for you to go back and change the type at a later date.

Also, if you use Strava, you can use https://activityfix.com/ to automatically change the Strava activity type to MTB, based on the name of the activity profile you set on the watch. You should also be able to assign gear in the same way. At least that's what I'm getting from a quick look at the web page.

  • Perfect, I'll keep that too.

    Thank you.
