Is there a way to use the 1690 without the cradle? Plugging in the USB port (whether to a computer or an AC/USB adapter) simply puts the unit into "computer" mode, with the initial Garmin screen and a computer icon at the bottom. In this mode, I can't seem to even figure out a way to turn off the screen, so that it just charges the battery without having the screen on. This would be really helpful when temporarily using the GPS in another car, so I can just take the unit without also unplugging and taking the cradle off the mount.
