Connect vs Watch vs Edge

I import activities into the web version of Connect. I record activities on my Epix watch and on my Edge 1050. Both devices transfer data to Connect. As I see it, the Epix uses the data recorded by it to assess health and training stats and the Edge uses data recorded by it to assess health and training stats. So, I also assume that looking at the combined data on Connect is the only way to get a true assessment from ALL the data. Is this correct? And if so, why can't connect update both the Epix watch and the Edge 1050 so that all three sources report the same assessment values?

And, I guess the other question is whether or not Connect fully takes in all of the data points from ALL activities in calculating the health and training stats.

  • Most of health and training stats are in fact calculated on the device(s). There is very little data processing on the Connect side. Connect is merely an interface for displaying the data from the devices on the phone (or on a computer). If you want consistent and accurate health & training stats, record all your activities with a Garmin device. If not that, then use at least 3rd party apps fully compatible with Garmin's ecosystem, and able to deliver all data necessary for the calculation (which then happens on your Garmin device, after syncing from the 3rd party app to to Connect, then from Connect to the device for processing, and after another sync, back to Connect, already processed).

  • As trux said, most training/health metrics are calculated on the Garmin device itself, not in Connect.

Regarding keeping training metrics in sync across devices, older devices supported this to a limited extent with Garmin's older Physio TrueUp feature. Newer devices, such as your Edge 1050 and Epix (Gen 2 - I assume) support this more comprehensively with Garmin's newer Unified Training Status feature.

The following support article explains Unified Training Status, explains how training metrics are calculated and synced when using multiple devices, and suggests setting your watch as both your primary training device and primary wearable, for best results.

So in fact, training metrics such as training status and training load should be in sync across all 3 sources: Garmin Connect, your Epix watch, and your Edge 1050.

And if so, why can't connect update both the Epix watch and the Edge 1050 so that all three sources report the same assessment values?

If you've set your primary training device and primary wearable to your Epix watch (as suggested above) and this isn't happening, I can only guess that it might be a bug and you might want to get in touch with Garmin Support: https://support.garmin.com
