Garmin trails send to device - why does this require paid sub??

So I can customize & download GPX route files from Alltrails, import under "Courses" in Garmin Connect and then send to device from there for free. Great. But I'd rather not use AllTrails, if I don't have to. Surely Garmin has some sort of free alternative? Oh, I see "Garmin Trails" Perfect!!

But wait.. It seems I can't use Garmin Connect -> Garmin Trails to send the route to my device! Are you guys really making people pay extra for this feature??  Total slap in the face, after already paying $500 for the device! 

Anyone else think this is absolutely ridiculous? Why not just let people choose a route using Garmin Trails and then send to device, without a monthly fee?

    Yep, that's behind a paywall. They want you to pay for the new Connect+.  I predict more-and-more of the new stuff will be there also, and in the end nothing will be free.

    And now the device is totally bricked a week later. So far, it seems like this company is not up to my standards. Going to try a replacement, but I may have to just settle for All Trails, at this rate.
