Linux/Cross Platform support

Garmin,

Please develop your tools so they are operating system agnostic. A browser plugin should not care what OS is behind it. The only thing keeping me from loving my garmin nuvi 755 is that I can't register it because the software requires windows or mac.

PLEASE find a way to support the linux community. Even if its making the code and info available to us to build our own tools.

another request for linux support for ANT agent

please make ANT agent work with linux. Thank you.
  • Well I'd suggest dropping a note to Andreas and check directly with him if he has plans to add support for your device any time soon. I'm not sure on what device he is working on right now.

He doesn't support anything that uses ANT technology.
  • +1

Another vote for Garmin to provide Linux support, although it looks like Linux support for the USB ANT stick has already been written. Credit also to Quarq for providing quarqd, although I'm not sure what license it's under.

    Linux support or loose customers

Garmin, your lack of support for Linux users is detrimental not only to your sales, but also to your products. As Linux users tend to experiment with and understand computers, they provide some of your most valued feedback and community support e.g. blogs. Losing us to your competitors will lead to an amplifier effect so please get up to speed and make cross-platform compatibility a priority for future software.

I logged into the XP partition of my dual boot machine for the first time in months today, just to update the firmware on my etrex 30. Great hardware Garmin, but your software lets you down badly.

I hate to break this to you, but even if people from Garmin read these forums daily, all the "+1" responses in the world aint gonna change their strategy to support Linux. Garmin is a for-profit company, making decisions based on... wait for it.... profitability.

Simply put, Garmin doesn't need to support Linux because Garmin already got your money when you bought the GPS! At this point, you are just an expense. And... people who prefer the penguin keep coming back, so why should they change?

Listen, I don't wanna be cynical, and I like to pick up the bat and beat the dead horse as much as the next - c'mon guys, lets face reality. If you want a gadget that supports your preferred OS, look to someone like globalsat - they have a simple USB driver and a published data protocol. They embrace technical collaboration with suers.

There ARE choices out there. But if you make a decision to use a niche OS, you have to make sacrifices in what products you use. Simple as that.

i am a business owner of a transport company. My company has purchased a few of their products as a test. If Garmin is smart they will not limit their support to micro$oft and Mac. Since a huge amount of trucking companies have looked into the GPS market. I would hope they read the Forums on their site, since anyone who is here has or will purchase a garmin product, people do research these days to check out a product before buying it.

  • Linux Support option

I have posted this on another thread. I am not connected in any way to the developer.

I have had good luck with the Alpha version of FRANT. Its takes a few manual steps to use but it works for me and its all under Linux without VM for my 310XT uploads.

    Check it out here:
    https://sourceforge.net/directory/os:linux/?q=FRANT

Its a little rough, may take a few restarts, but it is working for me

    Good Luck.

Am also interested in Linux support (for ANT Agent operations, mostly just listing "files" and getting FIT data off the device).

Ideally a ANT/FIT-uploader for my phone would be great. I know the iPhone has some connector. Not sure how easy it would be to make a "generic" USB/style connector for Android phones.

Awesome. Frant looks like just what I need. Just need to get USB reading and change the main file to jump FIT files rather than convert to GPX. Code structure looks pretty nice.
  • Just another vote to point out how backwards Garmin is. The various android apps have no issues with accessing and downloading data from my Garmin device from my Linux desktop. My only desktop computing platform is Linux (Ubuntu). Looks like Garmin will be left in the dustbin of history of companies who did not adapt to changing technology.
