Linux/Cross Platform support

Garmin,

Please develop your tools so they are operating system agnostic. A browser plugin should not care what OS is behind it. The only thing keeping me from loving my garmin nuvi 755 is that I can't register it because the software requires windows or mac.

PLEASE find a way to support the linux community. Even if its making the code and info available to us to build our own tools.

What we really need is a work-around for all data inputs/outputs that requires NO PLUGIN.

I can upload activities using the "Manual Upload" option. I prefer that extra work even if I had the option to install a plugin on my operating system. The same should be possible for downloading course data to a file.

Browser plugins need to die. It takes enough work for the developers to support the two popular lines of operating systems (Windows and Mac). Supporting Linux is probably never going to happen. Garmin needs, at the very least, to provide a plugin-free workflow for those who can't use their plugins. Then, keep the plugin around to keep the mainstream users' lives simple.

There already is a Linux version of the plugin (mentioned several times in this thread previously). http://www.andreas-diesner.de/garminplugin/doku.php

Sheesh Garmin, a simple link to a download repository for the firmware/GPS updates with the proviso of "We can provide you the data files, they need to be copied to /GARMIN/<$directory>, but we will not officially support a Linux update mechanism" would probably do.

With that someone could spend an hour or so writing a shell script to automate the process, or have it bundled into the otherwise excellent GarminCommunicator plugin from Andreas Diesner. OS-specific browser plugins (a totally bizarre concept in itself) just complicate what should be an incredibly simple process.

(Particularly given a number of Forerunner 620/220 users have had to manually copy the GPS 2.90 update to the watch mounted as a mass-storage device due to the broken webupdater process anyway, regardless of their chosen OS :D )

Hi guys! Don't worry. You can forget garmin software and use www.qlandkarte.org/. If you have a new device like Garmin Etrex 30 which is recognised as a USB MAss Storage, you only have to plug in the gps without any other configuration. Good luck!!!
  • I don't see the reason why Garmin connect does not support Linux? It's a browser based tool

Or am I just seeing a huge conspiracy that reveals itself in the absolute senseless switch to bing (Microsoft) maps?
  • Hi,

The new Garmin Connect Express only supports Windows and MAC. I am a linux user. How will I use Connect Express? Will I be able to use the new modern Connect?

    Thanks,
    Ladean
  • You can use manual uploads: http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activities, click on "Import". How did you use the old Garmin Connect?
