Linux/Cross Platform support

Garmin,

Please develop your tools so they are operating system agnostic. A browser plugin should not care what OS is behind it. The only thing keeping me from loving my garmin nuvi 755 is that I can't register it because the software requires windows or mac.

PLEASE find a way to support the linux community. Even if its making the code and info available to us to build our own tools.

    Linux support & browser plugin

Hi. There are already many linux GPS applications, including some to read & write mapsource maps, POI etc to devices. However the support website only works with Windows (and presumably Mac). If you can develop a Mac solution, then Linux shouldn't be too hard. The device drivers for Garmins are already there in the Open source land, you just need a plugin to access it (or perhaps a separate utility for updates, etc).

    plus 1

Add another who would like to see Linux support added. I recently switched to Linux and have been using my Garmin 305 for a few years now. I plan on staying with Linux and will probably be looking for an new running watch soon. I would like it to be another Garmin, however a watch with Linux support would have a pretty big leg-up in my camparisons.

Also, it's not like Linux is a new OS. It's been around for YEARS. It's not going anywhere.

FYI, manual uploading works with data fetched using gpsbabel. See https://forums.garmin.com/showpost.php?p=75870&postcount=10

Seems like Desktop Linux was declared dead six months ago....

Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead

What a pity, just Windows and OSX now.

I guess Android will be the final nail in the coffin with these tablet devices.

This article only reflects marketing. The technical quality of Linux is better than ever.

Support for Garmin Forerunner on Linux

    Please add support for Linux!

I have just tried using Mozilla on Windows Vista to upload a run from Forerunner 110. Somehow, instead all my history was erased. This is incredibly annoying! I am going to blame this on buggy plugin on Windows!

    Garmin,

Guess what! It is time for me to update my maps! The only question is going to be... Will I do it with your service? Or will I buy and upload maps from another provider from now on.

If you want to continue to have my business I recommend that you help my life easier by adding linux support. You win with more sales and customers win by having a product they can use.

Good luck and if I don't hear back from you this month (april 2011) you'll know I have likely paid my $300 this year to another company and will likely from now on as well.

Best of luck and hope to hear from you!

    Linux support

I've bought a Garmin edge 705 just last april. To my knowledge mapsource and plugins for MyGarmin and Garmin Connect are not available in Linux. :( This is a big dissapointment. If it's not a big inconvenience, it would be very helpfull if there will be in the future.;)

I use this http://www.andreas-diesner.de/garminplugin/doku.php with my FR305 and Edge705. It works just like the original with GC and other 3rd party websites. I found a bug once and the author solved in less then 24h.

There is packages for Ubuntu and Fedora but you can build it from the source for your linux distribution.

If you manage to installed it and like it, dont forget to donate. The money goes fully into the development of new devices. The author is planning to use the money to buy devices that he does not own so that he can implement/test them.

    Good luck
