Linux/Cross Platform support

Garmin,

Please develop your tools so they are operating system agnostic. A browser plugin should not care what OS is behind it. The only thing keeping me from loving my garmin nuvi 755 is that I can't register it because the software requires windows or mac.

PLEASE find a way to support the linux community. Even if its making the code and info available to us to build our own tools.

Perhaps Garmin has used one of these hyper-modern programming languages. These do not allow to be ported without tons of trouble.
  • No replies from Garmin?

Garmin is obviously not present in this forum themselves. But kudos for setting it up so their users can exchange ideas...

I've been using the Ubuntu package garmin-forerunner-tools which I believe utilizes the gpsbabel package. It works perfectly to import .gmn-files and convert them to .gpx for upload to i.e. everytrail.com.

BUT WHY DO I GET ERRORS ON UPLOADING THEM TO GARMIN CONNECT? The manual upload page doesn't say which file format it needs, and the error message only tells that "An error occured with your upload. Please try again." - what went wrong?
  • Good idea!

I was running a Windows via VirtualBox to get the plugin to work, but found it easier to run the Windows version Firefox via Wine and it works perfectly. Sure its not a native Linux solution, but it works for all models I have tried.

    Excellent idea! Thanks!

I have been using Ubuntu for the last 3 years now. Would be nice to get some basic Linux support from Garmin. To import .fit files and update firmware on the edge 500 anyway.

I recently bought an edge 500. Used my xp partions to upload data at first, but have found that i actually in Ubuntu/Firefox can upload files from the edge 500 "manually" by browsing the garmin device connected to usb. Then i'm runing sporttracks under mono (of course would have prefer a native Linux sporttracks version)..but
There is another tool mytoourbook that is eclipse based running on Linux, which even can import .fit files directly from the Garmin edge 500, so how difficult can i t be to fix!?

How do i update the firmware in the edge 500 from Linux ?
can i do as in the begining of this thread ?
  • +1

At home it isn't a huge deal as I have a windows box for gaming anyway. But at the end of the month I am scheduled to do a multi-day ride where I will have nothing but my netbook with me which runs Ubuntu. I would like to get the data off of my 305 at the end of the day. I may try the wine/FF route. Not sure the little netbook would stand up to a virtualbox windows install.

MyTourbook does the same as the "manual" GC upload: I simply uses the USB interface, i.e. it reads the .fit file from the file system directly. But as long as the Garmin devices behave as USB hard disks (the 500 and 605/705 do, the 305 not), this is sufficient.

You can download the firmware files directly from
    www8.garmin.com/.../<device-name>_<version>.gcd
    e.g. <device-name> = Edge500 and <version> = 230.
Of course you have to agree to the Software License Agreement implicitly to do that!
Then save the file as gupdate.gcd in folder Garmin.
As long as the WebUpdater doesn't support Linux it is the only update method.
EDIT: Seems to work without the '8' as well now.
  • +1 for linux support. Having to boot windows to get data off forerunner is a pita.

What a disappointment - spend $$ on a Garmin product, then find out I can't even register it and get updates unless I am running Windoze.
Add another vote for Linux support.
