I recently got a Dakota 20 and turned it on. After finding the satellites, the device displayed all signal bars full. I then looked on the map and the device was off by a good half mile. It does not matter whether I am inside or out, the device is still wrong. Is there a way to manually set my position or something?
Are you sure you are viewing the satellite screen on your unit? See page 18 on your manual. It would be very unusual to have all satellite bars at full strength. If that is true then I suspect your unit is faulty.
I'm just guessing here because I do not have a Dakota20 but your unit has a "Demo Mode". See page 32 in your manual. If you turn that on your unit will not work correctly with satellites and it will show fake satellite bars and of course the position shown will be way off.
To use the unit for real do not turn on "Demo Mode".
I'm having this same problem, its happened every time I've gone to use it in the mountains, but at home in the sacramento valley its always dead on. Here's an example of whats happening. When I started the hike, it had plenty of satellites (WAAS mode) but it was a mile and a half off. Then after about a half hour (same thing on my last 3 trips) it zips all over the place and then realizes where it actually is and is dead on the rest of the hike. Just to clarify, it doesnt always have reception, right now in my house, it fluctuates from 3-5, but when I start my hikes it has 5 bars and says accuracy 70ft or so.
I started and stopped the hike in the same parking lot, and took the same road to and from the lake
Hello Ryan,
I have no answer about your problem but I do have a question. What software are you using? It looks to have much better detail and quality than mine. Thanks for any info.
