How did I get suckered into buying a gps without knowing that it didn’t have the simple marine Chesapeake Bay maps on it? When I bought this unit it said come with a preloaded map. On the box it showed a really nice looking map. I get it take it out on the water and find out that I was mislead. I should have done better homework. I mean does Garmin really expect me to spend another 200$ bucks on one simple map.?? Really Garmin you guys make a greet unit but I would not have bought it if I had know about the lack of a simple map. So I don’t know what to do now. Plz can anyone give me any ideas about how I can get some type of maps that I can use on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis area with having to spend 200$ more. Thanks Shawn
I'm sorry about your experience. What device did you purchase? Most devices come with a BaseMap preinstalled. Every customer is looking for a different detailed map. Some are looking Topographic maps for hiking. Some are looking for Street Maps for driving directions. Some are looking for Inland Lake maps. Some are looking for BlueChart off shore maps. If you would like a detailed map you will need to purchase it. Alot of customers are familiar with where they are going and do not have a detailed map on the device. They use it to mark and save locations. What device do you have and what are you looking to use it for?
:(Yes I purchased the Garmin 76csx and yes it does have the BaseMap preinstalled on it and that is where the confusion began. From what I read on the box and saw on the box the map would be good enough to use around here on the Chesapeake Bay. I didn’t need a detailed nautical chart I just wanted a good map that would show the shore, maybe some buoys, marinas and simple things like nothing like a NOAA chart. I was hoping to at least have a gps with a simple marine map. Something that would show the shore line maybe a marine or even just show me that I am on the water right now. The basemap is not a map at all. I guess I was hoping that my almost 400 dollars would allow me to see a bit more is all. I feel as though from the way the box looked and read that I would have gotten a lot more map for my money. While I really like the unit itself I just wish now I would have maybe bought a different one. Maybe one with a better preloaded map. I am on the south river in the Chesapeake Bay right now and this gps is showing me that I am 1 mile on land. That’s pretty bad. I have never been that lost even without charts. Shawn
I agree with you Garffin. I thought I did enough research when comparing products, but now I feel I was mislead also. I wanted to update my gps from my older Magellan. After doing some comparison of features, the 76csx sounded like a nice unit for $400. Unfortunately, as you know, maybe it is a nice unit, but for $500 after you get a usable map. This was my first, and probably last Garmin. After reading some of the reviews on Amazon and others about the City Navigator North America NT, I have come about as far as I am going to with this unit. It should not make a difference if you buy the software on DVD, SD, or download it, but obviously it does. Rather than spend another $100 and get mislead again, I am going back to my old Megellan. The maps work well between PC and GPS, there is no form to fill out just to use it, and they are less expensive. Everything is more user friendly. To me it is not worth the money and trouble for the few differences in features. Jim
