Activity titles are cut off after completing workout

Hello! I've noticed when I complete a workout on my watch that has a title, the activity title will be prefixed with my location which subsequently cuts off the end of the title.

I don't think this is due to hitting a character limit, as some titles will end up with 41, 45, 54 characters etc...

Please see the image above showing some of the effected activity titles.

Anyone seen this before?

  • Actually I think it is a character limit, just not a limit on the entire title.

It looks like the (structured) workout name is is being cut off at 32 characters.

e.g. "W4 Sun Long Run - 18km Hilly Lon" is exactly 32 characters.

Unfortunately, Garmin has a lot of archaic limits exactly like this. Like the name of a course or a location may also be cut off at 32 characters, in some cases.

    I did a quick test:

    - created a run workout with a name longer than 32 characters

    - synced it to my Forerunner 955 watch

    - at this point, I could already see that the name had been shortened to 32 characters (when scrolling through my list of workouts, selecting the workout, and waiting for the name to automatically scroll to the end)

    - I synced the activity to my Connect account, opened it in the Connect website and exported the original FIT file (gear icon > Export File)

    - I opened the FIT file in https://www.fitfileviewer.com/, which shows all the information in the FIT file, even stuff Garmin doesn't show you

    - The Workout table shows the workout name that the watch saved to the activity file, and it was also shortened to 32 characters

So I think this is def a bad limitation, but I'm not sure Garmin will be able to fix it. There may be multiple layers of old code which insist on having the 32 character limit that Garmin may be unwilling to change because it currently "works".

Clearly Connect itself supports workout names longer than 32 characters, so the limitation has to be on the watch.

Ofc, if Garmin is generating those workout names (as part of a Garmin Coach plan or whatever) and those names are so long that Garmin itself is shortening them, that's a pretty ridiculous situation. If they can't or won't change the 32 character limit, at the very least they should avoid going over their own limit, otherwise it looks really bad on them. Typical lack of attention to detail imo.
