Goal options for Apnea make no sense...?

I'm trying to set a new goal for the activity type: Apnea using the Garmin Connect browser application.

I've selected:

  • Activity type: Apnea (same issue with Pool Apnea and Apnea Hunt)
  • Goal type: Distance (only available in KM) not sure who would dive a kilometer while holding their breath?

Other goal types also don't make sense. Hours? Who can hold their breath for hours? A user should be able to change the time to Sec. or Minutes?

Is there a way to change the Hr and Km settings?

  • If you were able to set distance 20 meters for Apnea, then every Apnea you log will count towards that goal. If you log depth 5 meters in 4 separate activities you will reach the goal. That is probably not what you want a goal for.

The goals cannot be used for performance goals like: reach depth of 20 meters, how long time you can hold your breath or be able to run at a specific pace/speed or longest distance ran in a single activity...

They can only be used for measuring progress towards a goal in logged time, distance, calories or number of activities over a specified period of time. Each activity will add to the progress of the goal.

For Apnea you can set a goal that you should log x number of hours or x number of activities per year.

  • Hi E7andy,

Thank you for your reply, but this still leaves me with some questions and Garmin should improve/ allow for modifications to suit the different Activity Types better.

In my opinion, the total distance recorded in Apnea can be horizontal and vertical, as in how far you've been swimming while in Apnea mode or distance as in depth? Both could be considered as two completely different goals.

You can maybe set as a goal to cover more ground in Apnea hunt or diver to a deeper depth as a goal in Apnea mode. The total accumulated distance isn't a goal I'd think is interesting to the specific activity type.

Apnea/ freediving is all about breaking your PR measured in depth in meters.

Breath Hold is almost always measured in seconds or Minutes and seconds, knowing you have held your breath for 6 hours in the last year doesn't provide any useful insight.

Knowing you have broke you goals/ PR and were able to hold your breath for 5 min and 21 sec would be a goals suitable for the activity type.

  • To use the goals in that way Garmin must rewrite it completely so it will take a long time before you will so that type of goals. Suggest it to Garmin: https://garmin.com/ideas

The goals you are describing are personal bests and that you could set goals for them.

Maybe Garmin is working on something new. We don't know until it is here. The current goals function is very limited and needs an update. I believe the current version fits better into the challenges section. Personal challenges.
