I have just returned my 8th copy of a Garmin Nuvi 1490T. Is there a known issue with these? I ask as I have bought all these from 2 different costco's. All have had the same issue, turn off and on repeatedly. Even after the firmware and software updates. I see the solution is to send the unit in for repair with an RMA. That is laughable, buying a product, then having to send it in for repair almost immediately. Is this affecting a certain serial number batch? If so, what serial numbers are not affected, that way I can go to Costco and buy one that I know works. Wonder if that is why they are selling them for $349.....
After having multiple problems with the now discontinued 765T, I got a refund from best buy and bought the 1490T from costco. I didn't even make it home and it started turning off and rebooting on its own. I first thought that maybe I can update the firmware to fix the issue but it won't even connect to my computer. I know that Garmin is the highest ranked GPS but lets face it, sometimes companies go downhill and that seems to be the case with Garmin. Now I'm afraid to even get another GPS. Maybe magellan will have something that works for more than 10 minutes. All of the great features that Garmin has doesn't mean a hill of beans if the thing doesn't ever work properly.
1490 will not start, flashes "GARMIN" start-up screen over and over
I've experienced the same problem with the three 1490's that I've had since May 26. Resets do not work, the units will not successfully connect to computer via USB, and Garmin tech support always insists "this is the first time we have heard of this problem."
I plan on continuing to get replacement 1490's at no charge to me, or the company goes broke, whichever occurs first.
I love the features of this unit, and (when it works) it works well.
I got a Nuvi 1490t for graduation, and I absolutely loved it. Big screen, big feautures. But then, three days later, it stopped working. It just flashed the Garmin name over and over. Didn't even get to the home screen. I tried to reset it, but it didn't work. I tried to turn it on while it was unplugged and plugged, and it didn't make a difference. So I returned it to Best Buy and they replaced it with another. And to my utter dismay that one did the same thing after a few days. Keep in mind these were from two different store locations. I returned that one to yet another store location, got them to take a look at it, and they couldn't figure it out. The one they replaced it with did the same thing also. On the day I got it. I returned it once again, this time trying out the 1390t, and what a surprised, that one did the same exact thing. I was convinced it would be fine because it's a different model, but no luck. I returned THAT one in exchange for a TomTom XL350tm (something which I chose on impulse in my... anger) and now I'm gonna return that one because I absolutely HATE the interface. Learned my lesson. Don't buy on impulse things you should research. I'm taking it back tomorrow for another Garmin, the 255wt. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed. I will be downgrading quite a bit and losing a lot of features. Unfortunately the money I received from the 1490t to the 1390t switch was used for emergency purposes so I won't be able to upgrade to the 1490t (not that I would trust it to work). Hopefully Garmin will have resolved this issue by the time I can buy back the gps I just LOVED... until it broke 3 times.
I am having the same problems with the 1390T I am on my third one, each working for about 24 hours before freezing and flashing between the Garmin screen and a white screen.
I had my 1490t for less than 2 months. Getting ready for a lifetime dream to travel out west, I loaded it with Garmin's Red Light Camera software, and my own custom planned route that I worked many hours on, and my first night out, it blew... just like you all have described. Now I am lost figuratively and literally.
How can this happen with a major brand like Garmin? This has ruined my vacation. For what it's worth, I bought this at a Best Buy in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Just tried to update my Nuvi 1490 T and now the unit is locked up. The mandatory update doesn't load I'd recommend that you hold off applying this update until Garmin can correct the problems. I saw a number of similar problems posted on other Garmin sites.
Was So Close to Buying a nuvi 1490 - but not now ...
doing research on the pros & cons of various GPS units - this one sounds like a lemon - was going to buy this refurbed from TigerDirect (but not now) ... this must be where all those refurbs are coming from ... you guys ...lol
Unfortunately it seems to be the same news everywhere and no one (especially from Garmin) have anything good to say - Actually no one from Garmin has ANYTHING to say - good or bad and I thought this was actually their forum space???
