Garmin Connect + Family Subscription?

Garmin, will you have a Garmin Connect + Family Subscription offering? Honestly for what you get, for a single sub its too expensive at least at this point, the value isnt there. But if you offered a family sub where one sub covered 5 garmin connect accounts I would pay for that so my family could all have access to the cool badges and challenges together and the extra data and insights. Thanks!

  • Sounds good. I recommend submitting the request on the Garmin Ideas page.

  • I just googled connect+ family plan and this was one of the first hits. I totally support this comment/suggestion.

  • Oh, this is great idea. And you will end up in a subscriptions world for premium products. You'll drive a car with subscription to heat your seat, washing machine with additional payments to rinse your clothes and coffee machine with subscription to make espresso machiatto because only black coffee will be included in $2k price. Way to go!

  • In general, I agree with you. But the world doesn't stand still. These models seem to become more common in order to generate more money for companies.

However, even well-known YouTubers agree that Garmin's launch was not a success.

If you ask me, the following ideas are conceivable:

    1) device prices should be lowered, and DIRECTLY coupled with a paid subscrition model.

    2) the device prices remain the same, but include a free period x for the subscrition model. After that, you pay for it. If you buy a new device, period X is always included in the purchase price.

They could even link the free period to the price of the device. The more expensive the device, the longer the free period included

I can even see advantages for Garmin itself here.

I can well imagine that more people will buy a new device if they get a free period X again.

    Totally agree.

  • Thank you, @bluefish, but I strongly disagree with your point. I understand the subscription model in software companies, and I'm not discussing that point. However, allowing hardware vendors to significantly and deliberately deteriorate their products' value with the aim of pushing their clients to subscriptions or new models is very bad for customers.

I understand that manufacturers want to sell new products, but every new model should be significantly better than the previous one. As a client, you should pay for value, not pay your money thoughtlessly to companies just because you like a particular brand. Now, companies want to sell new models that are almost the same as the previous ones. They want to sell subscriptions for features that were previously included in the product price. Therefore, we had the battery-gate with Apple or making products obsolete after 2 years, which only shows that companies don't want to sell value anymore. They aggressively want your money without offering anything valuable in exchange.

I also understand that, in your opinion, it's okay to sell subscriptions after a free period. But be aware that today you allow this kind of behavior with your watch, and tomorrow you will end up with the same pricing model for fridges, coffee machines, or cars. BMW tried to sell subscriptions for the seat heating feature. This is ridiculous, but I'm sure it would have become a normal market practice if client outrage hadn't occurred. It only shows that companies will do everything they can to push the boundaries and implement subscription models for everything. If you don't want to pay extra for every product and service, you should be averse to valueless subscriptions.

It's not like Garmin has problems with financial results. They are doing fine without it and have been improving year by year. They're looking for better numbers and easy benefits for the board without offering extra value to their clients.
