Low calorie estimation when using external HR

Recently I started using a fairly cheap external HR arm band (Cycplus H1).

Although HR readings seem valid (a bit elevated compared to my FR 945 readings) and recorded normally (HR chart in Garmin Connect activity) I noticed huge difference in calories burn estimations.

For example a ~11 KM run in zones 4 and 5 only 470 cals. Or a speedy walk of 6.2 km at 52 mins only 80 (!!!) cals.

I know that calorie estimation is not the most valid thing but these numbers don't make sense.

Today I decided to run without the external HR and made a similar 10K run (a bit lower average HR) and calorie estimation raised to 770 which seems normal.

The thing that I can't understand is that if HR recordings seem valid and similar to my watch's, if zones are set exactly the same on both occasions, why this difference each time I use the external HR?

I would say the most likely it is due to the fairly cheap HR but if its readings seem OK, how it can affect Garmin's calorie estimation algorithm?

If indeed its the external HR problem I would buy another one of a different brand but I would like to make sure that this won't happen with any external HR.

I have already checked HR max, default zones, weight and height inputs and are OK and its normal as calories are counted normal without using the external HR.

Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong or what to check?

Thanks very much in advance!

  • Could you post links to two comparable runs (about the same distance, duration, and avg HR), one with the external HRM, and the other one without it? And also the screenshots of the HR page from Garmin Connect Web (not from the phone app!) for both concerned days, please.

  • Thanks for replying.

I attach the links of 4 activities. 2 similar walking activities (one with and one without) and 2 similar running (one with and one without). HR data is shown inside.

Run with external HR ---> https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/18861167463

Run without external HR ---> https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/18870280071

Walk with (450 was manually inserted by me - original estimated from Garmin was 80 with just 1 active cal) ---> https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/18864697794

    Walk without ---> https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/18874447781

    Thanks again!

Not the one I need to see on the Heart Rate screen, though - I need to know what the 7 days avg HR were on both concerned days. Please post those screenshots too.

  • Here you are:

This is of the day with activities wearing it (one run and one walk):

This is yesterday when I was not wearing it and did similar activities:

  • TBH, I do not see why the Calories for the activities from Friday (with the strap) are lower than on Saturday (without the strap). Often, in similar cases, the Resting HR, changed body weight, or different HR patterns during the activities are behind the discrepancy, but none of it is the case here - the Resting HR is identical on both days, the body weight did not seem to change (it would impact the Resting Calories as well, which is not the case), and the HR patterns are very similar (I'd tell the Friday's activities could even trigger a very slightly higher values than the ones from Saturday).

I recommend reaching out to the Product Support through their website at https://support.garmin.com, though I am afraid they will not really investigate deeply. Typically, especially in the case of a non-US support, the operator just uses some pre-scripted canned responses, and won't forward the issue to the developers, unless there are statistically high numbers of complaints about the same issue. You will have to insist on creating a support case, and try to persuade them to forward your data to the developers.

  • Thanks for your time. Yes indeed everything from times, distances, hr is pretty similar and yes activities with strap should have shown more calories as bit higher HR recorded.

I have searched various sources online and even AI analyses to identify patterns but there is nothing I can find. The only different thing is that in activities with strap one extra field with respiration rate is added. The thing is that every time with external HR active cals are really low. For runs I would accept for example that for a 10KM as I have done it many times and my pace is steady OK 550 cals instead of 760. But 80 cals for a 6.28 km walking activity with 1 active calorie just does not make sense. Last thing is that in watch resting HR is set to 77. Possibly this can be related but if yes why it only affects the activities with strap? It does not make sense either.

In any case I will probably end up accepting that Garmin does not work well with this monitor regarding calories count. I can't see something more. At least it was fairly cheap (18 euros) so maybe I will get another one to check how it goes.

    Thanks!

Yes, that could be perhaps the clue. The respiration rate is derived from HRV. And the respiration data in your activity is full of gaps, which means the HRV data from the strap does not seem to be reliable. And since the respiration rate is directly related to the aerobic metabolic rate, it may indeed have an important impact on the Calories calculation as well.

This is how your respiratory rate graph looks, and below an example how it should normally be with a well functioning strap:
