Empty memory card? etrex legend cx

Former Member

Hello, I just bought a refurbished etrex legend cx, and it was supposed to come with a 64mb memory card. However, it came with a 1gb card. I'm not complaining about the card size, but when I plug it in, it shows that the card is empty. My question-should their not be anything from garmin on the memory card?

The basemap still works, so it must be installed on the etrex itself. I want to purchase some new maps but am worried that the memory card won't work because their is nothing from garmin on it.

Thanks

    4G63PWR,

The basemap and the unit's software are all stored on the internal memory in the eTrex. The card should be blank. The 64 MB cards that we shipped with the Legend Cx units were all blank. This enables you to load maps from one of our detailed mapping programs.

If you would like to double check and make sure the card is blank, you can put the unit is USB Mass Storage mode by going to Main Menu > Setup > Interface > USB Mass Storage. The unit will now be displayed as a removable drive on your computer. You can go to My Computer > Removable Drive to view the files on the card. To exit USB Mass Storage Mode, you can press and hold Power for a few seconds. The unit should then power on.

    Sorry, a newbie asking here:
1.) At the end did you mean power off?
2.) The OP asked about etrex Legend cx - I have etrex Vista.
    Does this behave similarly?
If so I do not see 'USB' at the Interface menu.
The only option displayed is serial data format GARMIN.
I am using a USB cable and COM3 which the GARMIN web site recognises, eg, webuploader.
So, is the Vista situation wholly different, or what should I see?

    Thanks

    MUYMALESTADO,

    1. No, pressing and holding POWER to exit USB Mass Storage Mode will power the unit on. Once it powers on, you can then power it off.

    2. The Legend Cx and the Vista will be different (unless you have a, Vista Cx or Vista HCx, then the steps are the same). The regular eTrex Vista does not have a USB Mass Storage mode. This mode is only found on eTrex units that use a microSD card (those units with a "x" in their title).
