Intensity minutes not calculating for indoor workouts

I noticed that for the last month or so that indoor runs and rides are not being counted towards intensity minutes. They’ve shown up in the past, but now they don’t. I have my heart rate zones set up properly, so I don’t know why this is happening now. I didn’t change any settings.

  • Which device is logging your activities? Does it support intensity minutes? Do you see intensity minutes being logged if you look in the intensity minutes glance on the watch?

  • Fenix 8, sapphire AMOLED. Yes it supports them. I do not see indoor activities in the app or on the watch.

  • I've got an Enduro 3 so very similar to the Fenix 8.

Today I've done several indoor activities:

Jump Rope: 3 IM (just 300 jumps)
Meditation: 0 IM (like it should be since my HR is not elevated)
Dance Fitness: 1 IM (just 1 song)
    Strength: 19 IM

So, it isn't a general error or behavior.

Check your heart rate during those activities. Is it elevated enough?

In the HR graph in your image the zones look skewed too the higher end. Maybe your HR settings are incorrect. You zone 1 is huge.

  • I don’t know why it’s skewed, though. I have them set up properly.

  • How did you come up with those zones?

I think that the default zones are:

    Z1: 50-60% of max
    Z2: 60-70%
    Z3: 70-80%
    Z4: 80-90%
    Z5: 90-100%

If we assume your max HR is set to 200 then your Z1 is set to 65-70%.

  • I utilized a website to determine it based on my age and max heart rate. I’ll try the % option and see if that works. Thanks

  • The formula 220 minus age is almost always incorrect. Max HR is individual and can't be calculated from age.

Best is to do a max HR test, but you can look at what max HR you usually reach during a race or sprints and add a few beats.

You can then look at time in zones for your runs and see if it looks ok. Too much or too little time in Z5 can indicate incorrect max HR.

  • I agree. I used a different method to find my max HR since by the 220 method it should be 183 when it’s really 192. I reset my watch, changed the HR zones to be a % based off 192 and still no intensity minutes. It shows me in zone 2 for the run, too.

  • I’m very confused as to why that zone 1 bar is so wide compared to the others.

I think it's because the grey segment actually includes both zone 0 and zone 1. (It's the same on watches, where graphical HR zones don't distinguish between zones 0 and 1)

So, in your case, the grey segment probably goes from 30-141 bpm. 30 is the lowest heart rate Garmin devices will measure, and it's been found that when Garmin calculates fractional HR zone values, like 0.5, it uses 30 as the minimum for zone 0.
