Dakota 20 won't power up

Three weeks ago I bought my Dakota 20 and I have been using it for about 15 hours. I was extremly careful and stored it in my pocket so it didn't get wet or something. Today when I was testing my unit and shut it down and then turned it on again it was stone dead. I switched batteries but no. And there is either no connecting thru USB.

I have installed a 4GB SD-micro card. Users manual says that's alright.

IN case I pushed the power button too quickly or something. Is there some way to reset the GPS to factory settings?

• Do you have a microSD card in the device?
Will it turn on with the card removed?
• I removed the SD card but still stone dead.
• Ok, in that case, we may try reinstalling or updating the software.
First you will need to download and install the WebUpdater program.
Here are links to download:

WebUpdater for Windows

WebUpdater for Mac

After the WebUpdater is installed it will attempt to find a device.
Press and hold your power button for about 10 seconds, connect it to your computer, continue holding the power button. Wait for one minute, then click on Find device. If it finds the device click next and continue to hold the power button untill the software starts to load. Let me know if this does or does not work.

• You probably need to contact Tech Support by "]email or phone to setup a repair order. 1-800-800-1020
• Is this some major issue with Dakota 20? Today I've googled for some solution but it seem like other people had same experiance as me. Perhaps I should claim money back from the store where I bought it? And buy a Oregon 300 or something?
• I've been using the Dakota 20 on the weekends for Geocaching and it's been great for me. Not sure what the issue is with yours. You may keep checking you post to see if anyone else may have a solution. I like the Dakota 20 better than the Oregon 300 because the Dakota 20 has the tri-axis compass where you do not have to hold the device level for the compass to work correctly and it's smaller and easier to hide when Geocaching.

dakota 20 my thoughts

I had an issue with power on. Would show Garmin then fade to out. I thought it was battery but all it needed the software update.

After I connect unit to pc, logged in to mygarmin, my device was found and update.

Downloaded topo maps, inported some geochaches (right from mygarmin; geocat should be much easier than with my nuvi car unit)

Everything is working well. Easy to use, works as expected, gets a sat reception indoors, outdoors and in car.

Thank you.:)

Dakota 20 power up problems

I purchased a Dakota 10 in October 09, decided to return for a Dakota 20, before I could return, it failed to power up. Received my new Dakota 20, it worked for about two weeks and it did same. Have downloaded Version 2.4 software but still will not power up. It displays the Garmin logo and then fades out or simply displays and Update verification status of 5%. Is this a widespread problem, two units and two identical problems. This is my first Garmin experience and it has been far from positive.

Had the same issue (Update verification status of 5% followed by screen going blank). Managed to resolve by i) downloading 2.4 via web updater and then ii) exporting a track from PC to Dakota 20. Note - the issue did not resolve itself until I had completed step 2. ie comparable experience to WMDPOWELL
