More data fields needed for Shoes

I'm not the only runner who has more than one pair of shoes in use at a time and want to keep track of the mileage for each pair.

PLEASE GARMIN, would you add some axtra data fields to record which shoes were used for each activity and a running total for easy analysis? I currently have 4 pairs in use so perhaps space for 5 different shoes would be great

    Workaround for shoe tracking

What I've done is create a "Course" and given it a name that equates to the shoes I want to track. I don't enter any course info (miles, route, etc.), just a course name. For example I have a "Brooks Radius" course, a "New Balance 1080" course, and a "New Balance MT625" course.

When I enter a run I select the appropriate "Course" that matches the shoe I wore for that run.

When I want to check the mileage for a specific shoe I go to Activities, then I filter the activities by Course, export the results to a .csv file, then it's just a matter of creating a formula to total up the mileage column.

I know it's not perfect, but until Garmin adds an equipment field (which they claimed they were working on three years ago) it works.

Kudos to DLPARTNER for coming up with an innovative way to get around a lacking feature (shoe/equipment mileage tracker) that really should be a complete no-brainer for Garmin Connect.

I'm still using Sport Tracks basically SOLELY for their equipment tracking option.

C'MON GARMIN! Get with the program!! :(
  • NOT YET? Software/website developers... you can do better!

What are you waiting for Garmin Team, we need it.

  • Shoe Mileage Tracking Request

Garmin, what's taking so long with the updates to Garmin Connect? You keep trying to show off Garmin Connect, but you still have a couple of major omissions. First, please add an easy way to track mileage on equipment (mileage on multiple pairs of shoes/bikes, etc). Second, add a "friend" feature so that we can easily see how our friends are doing with their workouts. Third, now that you have a real swimming watch, add a swimming PR section like you have for running/biking.

This site has really come a long way over the past few years, but there are still a couple of glaring omissions that users have repeatedly asked for. Those omissions keep a lot of users from making this their go to site.

PS - Thanks to the user that posted the custom course method as a workaround for Garmin's lack of equipment tracking.
  • +1. Very important data to many runners. Simple addition. In fact, adding the option for "Custom field" where users can add a field and track any metric they want, would be an even better solution. A tad harder to implement than a straight field to the database, but much more useful in the long run.
  • I'm entering a keyword that indicates the shoes to use for activities.

The keyword filtering works well on the menu "Activities" but I have for example 130 activities with a pair of running shoes and to know the total amount of kms. I should export to excel, and it is done by pages, not total filtered records which makes it very inconvenient to have to export a lot of pages to put them together and make the summation.

Another possibility, If I go to the Analyze section -> Reports I have a summation but I can not filter by keyword.

Just having a field with name or number of shoes on Report would be great or to export all the registers on just 1 excel not 20.

Is there a trick or some way to get the total kms done with a running shoes easily made?

No one uses the 'Event type' field on Garmin Connect. Allow users to modify that field to equipment type such as shoes or bikes. I am using this currently. I know that when I select training then that is my ONs and selecting race is my Newtons. I can later check to see how many miles I logged under either training or racing to see the mileage for each shoe type.
  • For what it's worth, I've been doing this at http://www.logyourrun.com/

If you create an account there, you can easily import a training session from connect.garmin.com, you just need the activity number:

    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/xxxxxxxxx

and also the time (though not necessary, it just doesn't import it for some reason).

You can add shoes at logyourrun, including several active pairs, designate a pair as the default to use, and even retire a pair. When you import a session, it will tell you how much distance you've currently put on the given pair of shoes.

I'd still prefer Garmin added a similar field on their site, but for now others might find this easier.
