Analytics analysis

I was a long time Endomondo user before UnderArmour shut it down. I specifically liked how I could tag runs with location, type of training, distance, etc. and then analyze the data later to see specific impact of types of training, distance, or location on pace, heart rate, etc over time. None of that is possible with Garmin as far as I know. How do you all analyze your run data?

  • I mostly use the metrics provided by Garmin like Endurance Score, Hill Score, Training Status, HRV Status, Body Battery.

Since I'm currently training hills for a race I've got a course with lots of ascent that I use as a metric of my progress. I name those activities with a unique name so I can filter them in the activities list and look at my performance: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activities

The times on that course together with Hill Score I think I get a good indication of my progress.

I'm an ultra runner and for that I use the monthly running distance and Endurance Score.

  • If you use the free 3rd-party site https://www.runalyze.com, it syncs with your Connect account and provides lots of additional data (as well as revealing certain things that are recorded by Garmin but not shown in Connect, like VO2 Max to 2 decimal places after every run).

In runalyze, you can tag runs and show histograms grouped by tag for metrics like pace zones, hr zones, distance and frequency. You can also see a breakdown of percentage spent in predefined pace/hr/power zones over the last 12 weeks or 6 months (for example).

smashrun.com is a bit less technical and has far fewer features, but tries to do a bit more "human-friendly" trend analysis. Like if you go out and run 8k, it will tell you if it's the fastest 8k run in the last X months. And it will show you a ranking of *all* your 8k runs so you can see how the latest one stacks up. It also has a bunch of badges and stuff. It tries gamify your runs and visualize your data in a fairly simple, yet kind of interesting way. Like It will show you a scatterplot of run distance vs pace where you can hover over a point and see a human-friendly description like "x% of your runs are faster than y pace and longer than z distance." As you roll over the distance vs. pace scatterplot, the corresponding distance per month and weekly stats per year charts will animate/highlight correspondingly, to show you exactly when and how often you ran at least that pace and distance. You can do the same for any of the 3 charts: roll over a point and see the other 2 charts light up.

Probably doesn't give you much that you can't get anywhere else, but the presentation is ok. I wouldn't use it as a replacement for Connect or Strava, but I think it's a nice supplement.
