Waypoints on Garmion 310XT

I recorded a track today on my garmin 310XT and uploaded it to garmin connect through my computer. The activity shows up fine, but there are no waypoints, which I took the time to stop and note today. I'm trying to double check some track distances for an upcoming competition and wanted to check "real time" with what I have measured in google earth.  Nothing shows up on garmin connect. I exported it to a GPX file and when I open in another device, it also does not give me my way points. Any idea wh?

  • The 310XT allows you to "Save Location." These saved locations are only viewable on the watch itself and not saved in the activity file. Several newer watches have the ability to view the saved locations as waypoints using the Garmin Explore app or the web site.

  • Technically, you might be able to transfer the waypoints from your 310XT to a PC as FIT file(s), using the ANT+ stick and 3rd party software, but there's nothing user-friendly that I can find.

    - Here's a command line tool on github: https://github.com/Tigge/antfs-cli (the reason I think transferring waypoints is possible is because this tool supports 310XT and the source code mentions waypoints.)

    - Here's a GUI app for Windows, from the ANT+ group itself (ANT-FS PC Tools): https://www.thisisant.com/developer/resources/software-tools/ (you do need to register for free)

I haven't tried any of this stuff myself, as I don't have a watch that uses an ANT+ stick.

As for ways around this in the future, instead of using waypoints, you could:

    - take a manual lap at every point of interest (yeah, I can see the downsides of this). Export the original FIT file by opening the activity in the Connect website and selecting gear icon > Export File, then open it in www.fitfileviewer.com -- this site will show you the lat/lon at the start/end of every lap

    - stop and start the timer at every point of interest. fitfileviewer.com can also show you the timestamp of every pause, but you would have to track down the corresponding GPS data yourself (which is available on the same site)

  • I still have a working 310XT. I was an early adopter in 2009. My recollection is that getting the saved locations off of the device was impossible. But maye I'm remembering it wrong. I'd prefer to encourage the OP to look into purchasing a modern watch.

  • The antfs-cli tool linked above was updated in 2020 to allow downloading waypoints. so somebody thinks it's possible for one of the devices that uses ANT-FS (file transfer via an ANT stick). I don't know if that means it's possible on 310XT though.

Not saying that either of these tools would be user-friendly in any case, but just that it *might* be possible to use one of them to download waypoints.

In other words, just because Garmin Express only downloads activities from 310XT, doesn't mean a 3rd party tool couldn't download additional data. I found an old DCR article about ANT sticks  where he discusses this possibility in the comments - he thought that it might be possible, but nobody had written an app to do so at the time (that he knew of).

I'd prefer to encourage the OP to look into purchasing a modern watch.

Sure, but that wouldn't help them to get the data they've already gathered on their existing watch.

I guess it wouldn't be impossible to just look at the locations on the watch itself. Probably less tedious than running 3rd party software that isn't user friendly.
