Discovery Points Idea (Trail) – Gamification & Route Exploration in Garmin Connect

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share an idea that could make Garmin Connect even more engaging for runners: Discovery Points.

How It Works

  • Every time a user runs a new route, they earn Discovery Points.
  • These points contribute to ranks, fostering a fun and competitive experience.
  • A personalized user map would track all the routes a runner has completed, allowing them to see their progress over time.

Benefits

White check mark Motivation to explore – Encourages runners to try new routes and break out of their routine.
White check mark Stronger community engagement – Leaderboards and rankings could add a competitive edge.
White check mark Better training insights – A personal heatmap of completed routes helps users analyze where they’ve run and identify areas still to explore.
White check mark Old and new route It helps runners plan and diversify their training

What do you think? Would you find this useful?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

  • In my watch there are dozens of activities that have not be synch.
By the way your suggestion is right: if I put my trail activities to explore, I can see the together: thanks.

Unfortunately it isn't so UX and import/export probably must to be done manually.

  • It is a great idea and I already use a number of different services that have implemented it, so the question is if Garmin wants to implement the same thing but natively. Since Garmin is the central hub for data they can add it without being better than the competition. All Garmin users will automatically use it just like with the badges.

https://wandrer.earth/ (Garmin, Strava and RWG) - Both running/walking and cycling.

https://citystrides.com/ (Garmin, Strava and a few more) - Only running

    https://streetferret.com/ (Strava) - Only running

https://squadrats.com/ (Garmin and Strava) - Got a different concept with the world split into squares and you must visit.

  • thank you.

the services you suggested are for the gamification role of related to a map with the streets we run?

  • Those services will give you maps of where you've ran and you get points and leaderboards, so I think they implement everything you described.

  • Great. What is the best for you for the goal to check where we run?

  • The services I like the most are Wandrer and Squadrats.

Wandrer got lots of streets and paths added and support running/walking and cycling with different maps.

[I get an error when trying to add images]

Squadrats tracks all logged activities and no need to run every single street.. If you zoom in you see the individual activities and can click them and view the original in Strava. So, it is a great way to find activities and find out when you were in different places.
