Map, lap and heartrate data disappeared

I have been uploading my data to both Garmin Training Centre and Garmin Connect for most of this year, and it has all been going well.

However, after my most recent upload of the Melbourne Marathon (11-Oct-2009), I went back to check on a previous marathon (31-May-2009), and discovered that it is missing data. This entry and most of my older entries (I have not checked them all) are missing map data ("No map data found for this activity"), as well as the timing and heartrate charts - the averages for time and heartrate appear, but the charts are not there.

These entries definitely had this data in them previously.

It appears that it is not loading correctly, as the bottom of the browser window says "Transferring data from connectapi.garmin.com".

Does anyone know what is causing this or how to fix it. I am certainly glad that I have not given up on the desktop software yet if the online setup loses my data!

Cheers, Nick.

stupid answer from garmin - needs addressed

I have just experienced the data that is lost because the the device deleted data to make room for new data.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. How hard is it to tell the user that the device is nearing capacity, please delete something? I would have been happy to save off the data had I known it was full.

I hope no one from Garmin goes to Microsoft. Great idea, your hard drive is almost full, we will just start deleting old data without warning just in case you want to save something new.

Use some common sense and change the firmware to address this issue.
  • On the 310xt data is not wiped to make room for new activities, (as in the 305), the wacth just reports that it is full and will not record any more.

At this point you can manually delete old data to accommodate the new.

A few firmware versions ago there were problems on the 310xt that were possibly caused by memory filling up.

The best was to prevent this is to delete the data every time you download your watch. (the data is stored on your computer and accessed by GTC and other sport software (Ascent on my mac) and moved to connect after a download when you have an internet connection.)
This can be done automatically in the ant agent preferences "after a successful download"

Personally, I would caution against this, just in case there is a problem during the download. I prefer to actually see my activity on GC or Ascent before I delete it from the Forerunner or Edge. Yes, it's an extra step, but every now and then I just go to my device and delete my old activities. Most devices have an option to delete activities older than a month, and with the newer devices that act as USB mass storage devices, it's easy enough to drag the old activities to the trash.

    Just a thought.
