Garmin Connect showing resting heart rate.

I only use my Garmin edge 540 including a HRM when cycling.  Other than that, I don't where any Garmin monitors.  Where is the resting heart rate in the Garmin connect web version coming from?

  • Where is the resting heart rate in the Garmin connect web version coming from?

It is detected when you are sleeping or still, but if you only have a cycling computer, you better disable the auto-detection, and set it manually. I do not know where you find the setting on Edge 540, but on my watch it is in Device Settings » User Profile » Heart Rate & Power Zones » Heart Rate » Resting HR » Use Average » Off, and then Set Custom to the desired value.

  • I'm wondering about the exact same problem as OP, and I have the exact settings you suggest, and I only train with HRM with wrist HR off, and I have the custom Resting-HR set to 50 bpm, and all health metrics are switched off.

    But Fitness Age suggests:

    "Reduce resting heart rate
    Monthly average: 81 bpm"

So, where does the 81 bpm come from?

    Fenix 7X Pro
    SW 19.41

EDIT: And I don't sleep with my watch.

  • I have the custom Resting-HR set to 50 bpm

Do you have the option "Use Average" set to Off, too? Without it being off, the custom RHR will not be used.

    Yes, its set to Off.

  • In that case, I recommend reporting it to the Support. And in the time being, before they fix it (which may take years, unless there are massive complaints from hundreds of users), I am afraid you'd have to enable the HR sensor at least once a week during rest in order that it can detect your true Resting HR.

During activities I only use HRM. I assume the resting HR is measured at the start of the activity and therefore isn't really at rest. And custom-HR is ignored.

  • Exactly. That's why I am telling, that your only options are either reporting the bug and waiting for a fix, or enabling the wrist HR sensor while you are resting.

  • Thank you for the response. I turn my Garmin Edge on a few minutes before my cycling workout and turn it off about 10 minutes after my workout.  I am guessing that the resting heart rate comes from those two periods of time.  My concern was that the resting heart rate measured by the Garmin is significantly higher than my completely relaxed resting heart which I measure occasionally in a period of relaxation.  I monitor my heart rate on all training rides after I had a couple of ablations several years ago to correct heart arrhythmias. My Dr told me that 30 years of bicycle racing was most likely the cause.  I haven't had any problems since the ablations although I lost about 10 beats per minute on my max heart rate after the ablations.  The Garmin-measured resting heart rate had me concerned.  I still ride 6 days a week and participate in the occasional gran fondo, century or gravel event.  It keeps me sane.
