Is it possible to connect with someone in China?

A friend using Garmin Forerunner 255 sent a link from her Android app Connect for connection and I found her account was with connect.garmin.cn, not connect.garmin.com. Is there any way to connect with her on connect.garmin.com? Is it possible for her to use connect.garmin.com instead of connect.garmin.cn?

  • No, unless one of you changes the account in order to have them on the same domain. Chinese accounts are isolated from the rest of the world because of the censorship enforced by the Chinese government.

  • Thank you. I assume she can change the domain to connect.garmin.com. She would be very happy to do it. She just bought the watch a few days ago, and the store helped her set up Connect on her phone. It sounds like the app selected the PRC domain automatically. I will ask her to try. Do you happen to know a pointer to the instructions?

  • I assume she can change the domain to connect.garmin.com.

Not sure how it works in China, but it is possible the domain is blocked there, and she would have to use a VPN, which may be illegal.

If she can open the domain garmin.com, she just needs to create a new account there, and also be sure not to select China as her location, when asked for the country.

  • Thank you. I will ask her to try. I wonder if the Chinese version of the app Connect is different. Google Play is blocked.

  • Could be. The app can be also installed from apkmirror.com. It can be also bound to the phone location, so she might need to fake it. However, she can also create the GC account in browser, on the web, and sync over the USB cable to Garmin Express. She might perhaps find some information on Chinese social media, though it is more probable such information is censored too.

  • Thank you. I will ask her to experiment with it. I will report back here.

  • Hi, how did you get on please? My son lives in China and we've just come across the same problem :|

  • She gave up after trying all sorts of things.

  • Oh, ok, thank you. He's going to try a few things but if it comes down to having to use a VPN to upload his tracks it isn't worth the effort.

  • I rather suggest you both get a free Strava account, and pair it with Garmin Connect. In this way you can automatically share the activities on Strava. I have some friends in China, and see their activities in this way.
