Duplicate activities

Hi all,

I've just got a new Fenix 8, which is lovely! As far as I understand, in order to allow the Garmin to build all the athlete info/training score/analysis etc. I need to track every activity using the watch (which all makes sense - no issues). The question I have is has anyone come up with a good approach to how to avoid duplicate activities being recorded in Garmin Connect and/or Strava?

For example, if I do a Zwift ride, I will set my watch to track an indoor ride (as to get all the HR etc. info) but when I then save the activity I will get the Garmin and Zwift ride both uploading to Strava and Garmin Connect. Am I not seeing an option to just have Garmin Connect just have watch data and not Zwift and then is there anything anyone has found other than deleting the garmin ride from Strava?

Cheers,

Mike

  • Disconnect Zwift from Garmin Connect, then you will not see the Zwift one there.

Then in Strava you have to decide if you want the data from Zwift or Garmin Connect. Disconnect the one you don't want. You can't select to not sync rides or virtual rides to Strava. It is all or nothing. So, it is easier to just delete the duplicates.

  • Thanks! I was hoping someone might know how a way where you could select to not have virtual rides upload from Garmin, but for runs/swims they do, but it sounds like it's all or nothing.

    Cheers

  • where you could select to not have virtual rides upload from Garmin

Garmin does not upload anything anywhere, it just has an API, where 3rd parties can access your full activity data, and it is up to them what they choose or allow to download and process. Strava for example indeed does some filtering, and does not download certain types of activities (for example diving, if I remember well), so technically they are able to do it, though it is not configurable on their side, AFAIK. I recommend contacting them, and suggesting them the feature.

In your place, I would indeed disconnect Zwift from Garmin Connect, as suggests. Zwift rides are not needed in Connect. If you record the rides with a Garmin device connected to the bike sensors and to the HRM, it has all the data that is needed for the processing of all metrics, and it is definitely superior in comparison to the metrics you can get from Zwift. The only thing that is missing, is the virtual track, which is imaginary, and has no impact on any fitness metrics, anyway.
