Please put me out of my misery....intensity minutes!!

Got up this morning, decided to row (first time in a while).

I use SmartRow to record rowing activities.

I pushed the activity to Garmin via Run Gap.

Clearly the HR data has been recorded (first screenshot), but it doesn't seem to have translated into calculating the Intensity Minutes even though the Intensity Minutes recognizes the activity (second screenshot).

What is going on with the Intensity MInutes? How are they calculated? Why won't they update!?!?

  • Unfortunately you have to record your activity on a Garmin device for intensity minutes to be calculated properly:

Can I Get Intensity Minutes From Third-Party Activities?

Third-party recorded activities are not inherently compatible with the intensity minutes feature. If you wear your Garmin watch while recording activities using third-party apps (such as Zwift) or non-intensity minute compatible devices and upload these to Garmin Connect, you may see a very small number of intensity minutes in your activity details page in Connect for these activities. This is normal due to the heart rate still being recorded in the background on your watch.

  • Wow, I had no clue.

Especially as my outdoor rides which I record with a Hammerhead Karoo and then sync via RunGap as well do calculate the intensity minutes.

This lack of consistency is extremely frustrating. I suspect this also makes many of the Garmin features (training load, training readiness, body battery) not 100% accurate.

  • I wear my watch, even while recording activities on another platform. Connect then "adds" the Intensity Minutes to the activity in Connect. It seems to be more accurate if the watch is in HR Broadcast mode, even if you're not using the resultant HR signal anywhere.

The consistency is all right as long as you record all your physical activity with a Garmin device.

  • It seems to be more accurate if the watch is in HR Broadcast mode, even if you're not using the resultant HR signal anywhere.

I'm guessing this is because broadcasting HR causes HR to be sampled once per second (as it would be if you were recording an activity), while the normal sampling rate (non-activity, non-broadcasting) is lower

  • There's something more than sampling frequency going on, though I don't know what. My observation is that I can be sustaining HR above 140 for a significant period but the watch will continue to report around 80. As soon as I enable HR Broadcast the displayed HR increases in steps up to the 140 mark.
