Underwhilmed By Garmin Connect

First let me say I absolutely loved Motion Based and was extremely skeptical about the migration to wards Garmin Connect. So much so that I put it off as long as possible. I was a premium subscriber and would have continued my subscription if it had been available. The information and reports were everything I could have wanted. I have been using my 305e for over three years now and it has been a godsend in helping achieve my cycling goals. The 305 Edge and MotionBased working on my behalf was in-it-self a motivating factor in allowing me to continue to develop my cycling goals. Having said all that I must say I am very concerned about Garmin Connect as it currently operates. I feel I am being cheated by Garmin because I no longer have all the previous reports and features that were previously available to me as a subscriber. I know I will be grandfathered on some future date ( that as far as I know no known date has been published) but I don't really care about what will happen on some future date. Who knows when it will become available? I ride now and I train now so I want it now. Don't get me wrong if I had some information telling me it would be soon I would be a little more patient, but some cryptic sentences telling me those former features will become available on some future date doesn't cut it for me. I believe most subscribers would have gladly waited until Garmin Connect would have been made available with most of those features already running. Why wasn't this done?

Perhaps you succeeded so well at Motion Based that you are now the victim of your own success, all I can say is that Garmin Connect as it currently works is a much inferior product and I have no current information that satisfies my pessimism. If I am mis-informed please correct me, I do not wish to come across as some self -entitled consumer which no doubt I am. If any administrator would comment it would be most appreciated. I also want to say that Garmin's technical support on the other hand is the best I have ever encountered and they are most helpful when I do contact them. I guess you guys just spoiled me. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion.
  • First, I never used MotionBase before for my many bike rides. But I've heard a lot of good things about it in the MotionBase Forum, which I was following frequently for Garmin Edge Support questions, which were discussed there very professional.

I'm a Mac user and I use Ascent for my offline syncs, which fits all my needs for analysis purposes.

I sync my rides and runs to garmin connect to and don't really get used to the "bubbly-flashy" interface I'm confronted with. But I like the free service to share my rides with my friends and on facebook.

Could you please be so kind and point out what features you are missing in garmin connect? Please make a list, post it here and send it to the garmin support. I guess they do listen!?
They propably have employees which were used to MotionBase as well as you were. I don't think they are ignorant, I just think that they are overwhelmed by the big community which is using there service. That's probably the reason, why there server on garmin connect is down so often.

A timeframe for new features on garmin-connect would be appreciated on my side as well.

    Well said!

I think the poor programers are doing their best working with one old server and a couple of routers. Someone higher up messed up or they don't have enough resources.

As an old Motionbased subscriber I agree 100%,. but I really think you need to send that very well written message to somewhere else within garmin than on these forums. I'd assume the only garmin staff that are reading/acting upon these posts are the staff that are in charge of garmin connect and I really doubt they'd pass the message on or act on it.
  • I agree--Connect in a poor shell of MotionBase. Connect has few features above the Training Software.

I was a paying member at Motionbase and would still gladly be one. Now I am stuck with Connect, they only transfered over 2/3 of my rides and now I can't access them on Motionbase. That bites big time. I really hope they can pull it together. Due to a puter crash I lost 80% of my rides so i don't even have them in Training. My bad but that's one of the reasons I paid for Motionbase.

I don't want to be a pessimistic complainer but GConnect really sucks compare to MotionBased. As far as when it will work or when they will catch up: don't hold your breath, they said last August we would have something better, so far NOTHING. They claim they support all computers,... doesn't even support Safari on a MAC after YEARS of complaining so, the G Connect programmers are really clueless (did you ever notice that to update their web-site, they shut it down for DAYS AT A TIME, instead of debugging their web-site somewhere else and just changing the address when it is done....) Bottom line we are in deep trouble with Garmin. Anyone knows another great web site to keep track of runs? This would be the best way to do it: move out of clue-less Garmin... really REALLY SUCKS.....
  • I think all the unahppy people should pool their money, but a server, hire programmers and be done with it.
