Added Activity made from a copy of a listed activity appears as the name it was given in Garmin connect, but not in an app it is imported into

I have added a new activity to the list of activities on the watch. Actually I have done it twice.

The first time I just added it to the watch on the watch and managed to misspell the new activity SnowshovellingG.  It would appear on Garmin Connect and also I exported it to another app and id would appear as I had named it.

I don't have to shovel all the time and the next time I had to shovel it again appeared correctly on Garmin connect, but just as  just a Gaman activity on the other app.  I didn't knowingly change anything

A few weeks later I learned how to do i ot from the Connect app and to copy a listed activity to base it on and rename it. I chose cardio and spelled Snow Shoveling correctly this time, then deleted the old misspelled activity.  This time the activity appeared as I named it on Garmin connect but as indoor cardio activity on the other app.

Today I looked into this was told to check the settings under display preferences to be sure I had to Location and device activity name. It wasn't so I changed it to that.

I never changed it earlier, but there had been an update so maybe that changed it.

I made those changes earlier today after I had shoveled snow and noticed the name I used wasn't being exported. A snowplow went by and filled in the driveway with snow so I went out and shoveled it out this evening. This was after I made the changes I mentioned above. It still was not exporting with the name I gave it. I went back to check to make sure the settings actually got changed and they had

Any ideas?

  • So, everything is working Garmin Connect? The setting in Garmin Connect only affects what is showing in Garmin Connect. It got no effect on other apps. The other apps just fetch the FIT files and use the data that is stored in those files.

Which other app are you using?

  • I did notice that since I made the new activity from the copy of cardio that when I go to start it it says GPS disabled. I had never used the cardio activity before and thought maybe it is disabled by default. I did look for any settings that I might have changed or were already set to disable GPS for cardio. I do remember the message as being disabled, not unavailable. For this particular activity, for me at this time location wasn't off much interest and I do move around a little, most of the effort as well as are movement is moving snow, not moving about. I do remember getting a map showing me moving about using this new added activity at least one time, but not lately.

I don't know if GPS means just GPS or is actually a mixed GPS/cell phone tower signal. I do know GPS needs a clear line of sight to the satellites to work, not just with this watch, but anywhere. Cell phone tower got added after 9-11 and other natural disasters when survivors were buried in rubble and could communicate, but whatever location they new there were in at the time had been rearranged.  It has also been both very cloudy with clouds full of water and also is cold so the watch is under a coat and another layer of fabric. I hadn't been paying attention to the message, but I do remember after I added the activity again using a copy of cardio it said GPS was disabled.  Maybe since location isn't available the setting which includes location can't work?

The other app that is being used to display this data is Cronometer. When I first added some activities only using the data entry method on the watch, it did include the name I entered using the text editor available on the watch. I couldn't find a symbol to add a space and I also managed to make a typo doing it this way. That is why I did it again using the app or the web dashboard to the app after I found some instructions on how to do it that way later. All I had to guide me initially was a very quick, terse youtube video. But at least originally, the label Iused did migrate to Cronometer, typo and all.

Seams like the setting.s would create the file name for the FIT file.

I also have used the walking and biking activities with no changes. They have included maps in the past. I have been busy doing other things and haven't used the walk function recently and don't know if the map function is working on it. It has been too cold and snowing for biking. I have been tracking steps, but don't really ever recall seeing a map with that activity.

I will try just turning on walking for a while. I do move about so there should be something to map. That should give me an idea whether GPS is working or not.

  • Cardio is an indoor activity so GPS should and will be disabled.

The settings in Garmin Connect will not affect the name in the FIT file. The watch creates the FIT file.

  • The name for the new activity that I created using the connect app/dashboard also appears as I set it up on the watch itself. I don't know if that matters. However, as I mentioned the name I created for a new activity used to appear in both the connect app/dashboard and also as in the name of the Garmin activity that appeared in the Cronometer list. Something has changed.

When I searched for this and found that suggestion of changing the setting to location, activity name I found a few hits. One was AI generated and I don't remember which was which, but it said that the issue was on the Garmin side and suggested to look at the display settings  and to set them as in the screenshot. I know that AI muddles things and though written with great authority seems to usually be wrong.

  • Ask Cronometer. They are the ones setting the name on their side.

  • I took a screenshot of how it appeared on Cronometer when I added the activity using the editor on the watch.  It wasn't based on any of the predifined activities on the list in the watch. and another as it is appearing now, after I made a new activity based on cardio as that is mainly the type of activity it is.

For a while I was thinking maybe at first only the name I had it set at was only appearing in the connect app, but my memory was correct

I had also seen earlier posts about adding activities on this forum and the answer was always that it can't be done. They were older posts though so maybe that was the case at the time.

  • But you wrote that named it to "SnowshovellingG" which isn't the same as in Cronometer.

Shouldn't it also say "(Garmin)" afterwards as the source?

  • I knew it was a type, I was wrong what the type was. The text editor on the phone is hard to use and I made many typos deleted and started over many times until thought I had it correct. Later I see it was still wrong. I don't know why it doesn't show garmin activity on the Cronometer side either, but that is how it appeared. I can't edit it from withing cronometer.  I tried and would have just changed it manually as snow shoveling is seasonal and even then isn't done all that often.
