Linking non garmin HRMto your garmin watch

I was struggling to find help to connect my myzone HRM to my Garmin.
I’ve figured out how to do this so thought I would post a blog for anyone else having these issues.

First things first you cannot connect a non garmin device (such as a HRM) to garmin connect.

You can however connect it to your watch. Now there is a blog stating you can do this but not how.

For my watch vivoactive 5 you have to hold the B button to find the settings>accessories. From there you select add new (ensure the accessory is on) and the watch will search for the device.

This shouldn’t take too long. If it takes more than 2 mins, which mine did, I had to turn the watch off then on and follow the steps through to pair the HRM.

For your own individual watch I’d recommend looking at the garmin manual to find the settings option and you should be able to follow the above steps.

Hope this helps

Here is the garmin manual I have for my watch

  • That is good that you have fixed your problem.

For others reading this post. Garmin Connect Web or Mobile app is not intended to connect to Sensors directly. There is no point.

Devices like watch, bike computer etc are interface between sensors and Garmin Connect.

Yes it is possible to Pair BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) Sensor to your phone and such could be visible in Garmin Connect. Yes, name might be a bit confusing, but it is not intended for that.

Sensors can measure HR, but can be also Lights, Power meter, Cadence and other metrics. Garmin Connect has no function to present data gathered by those sensors.

If you have trouble connecting your BLE sensor to Device (watch, bike computer etc) check if everything is fine with it nRF app on your phone. Those people Nordic Semiconductors are manufacturing microchips for BLE communication.

    That's not true.

Garmin HRM-PRO / HRM-PRO+ chest straps are absolutely intended to connect the Garmin Connect phone app (on iOS or Android) to support the collection of (supplementary) activity tracking data when your watch isn't being worn. Simply put, the strap collects certain data (like HR, calories, steps, intensity minutes) and syncs it Connect after the fact, without needing to sync with the watch first.

As a matter of fact, the strap has to sync with Connect for this feature to work, as the strap won't sync this supplementary data to the watch (I'm not counting the "download HR" feature which combines the stored strap HR with the activity data after you save an activity, because it's not the same thing.) After the supplementary data is synced to Connect, it will be synced back to the watch using Physio TrueUp.

In Connect, not only can you pair with one of those chest straps by tapping on the watch icon (upper right hand corner) and selecting Add Device, but the chest strap will also show up in the list of devices (along with your watch), and a synchronization button/status will be shown when the strap is connected.

Here's my personal use case for this feature:

    - I wear an HRM-PRO+ strap while I play basketball and record an activity with my FR955 watch, but I don't wear the watch while I play (which means steps are not counted).

    - After I finish playing and save the activity, the steps I took during the activity aren't accounted for (yet), on either Connect or the watch. When the strap syncs with Connect on my phone, the steps I took during the activity are first synced to Connect, then synced to my watch via Physio TrueUp.

The HRM-Pro® and HRM-Pro® Plus monitors can provide supplementary activity tracking data by recording heart rate, calories, intensity minutes, and step data when your Garmin Watch or Edge® Cycling Computer cannot be worn or used. This data can be sent to your Garmin ConnectTm account without having to first sync with another Garmin Watch or Edge Cycling Computer.

  • Having said all of that, it is indeed the case that for *normal* usage of an HR strap (whether it's Garmin or non-Garmin), you're supposed to connect the strap to the watch.

(By normal usage, I mean simply recording HR during an activity.)
