Data Went Away

I went for a ride today. While I was riding my Garmin shut off; so I turned it back on. When I returned home I plugged it in to my computer, and then loaded it in to the Garmin training center. My whole ride was there, except for a small gap (depicted by a short straight line) for the interval where the device had been shut off.

OK - here's the weird part!

This evening I uploaded to Garmin Connect; and I noticed the entire first lap was missing. I thought it was rather odd, so I went back to the Training Center to check it out, and the first lap was missing there too! I know with certainty it was there when I first uploaded. The device had been left plugged in to the computer all day, but I did not do anything with it, and there is no way I (for instance) deleted the lap from the device.

In hundreds of rides I have never seen this before...

Does anyone have a clue what might have happened?

    Data Went Away

    Edge 305
  • Can you export the activity from Training Center and post here? Just curious if anything can be salvaged from it.

Data Went Away - Exported TCX attached

    Here is the TCX file
  • The structure of the file looks fine, so no corruption in what you posted. Not knowing what first lap you are referring to, I'm attaching an image here. Seems you started at UCSC and rode mostly in a clockwise fashion. But the rude ends before reaching the start.

Being this is an Edge device, there isn't much you can do with the data. Does the ride look okay when you look at the Map view of the activity in History on the device? It had been a while since I've used the 305 extensively, but I wonder if saving the ride as a course will preserve the entire ride that you can later convert from Course to Activity.

    Data Lost

    Steve,

Thanks for looking at this. The first lap actually starts where the finish flag is. I rode up (North) Empire Grade road and turned into UCSC at the Western entrance. I then rode up Heller (I believe that's the road name) to where the start is shown. It was just before the shown start that the device shut off. I turned the device back on and continued my ride.

This is what's so odd. After I turned the device back on it was showing as if the ride was continued i.e. it was showing I had ridden 1+ miles. When I got home and first downloaded to Training Center, the entire ride showed up (with the start and finish at the same spot). That's the source of my consternation; it was there, now it's gone. Just too weird. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the whole course was there, with the exception of a short straight line from where the device shut off to the point that is now showing as the start. The "first lap" I refered to (which is a minor misnomer) that went away, is the part between the finish (the real start) and the shown start.

(Sorry if this sounds confusing / convoluted; the fact that this went away is quite bewildering to me...)
  • When you look at the device at the map for the activity, does it appear the first part of the first lap is there?

    Data Lost

Looks the same on the device now.

The salient point is when I first connected and downloaded to Training Center the whole ride was there.

    It isn't now.

I was just looking for input on how it might have disappeared.

    Data Went Away - Again!

    Steve (et al),

This has got me very upset!

The exact same thing happened again, and I don't understand what's happening. This time - immediately after I uploaded my workout to training center I exported the file. My full ride was there - I clearly saw it!

Then I went to upload to Garmin Connect. The uploaded file was missing the beginning of the ride - same as last time.

Here's the kicker (and I don't understand how this can be); I went back to the TCX file I had saved away, and the data was missing from the file that I had saved!

Doing these lengthy rides and having something in the process fail is a heck of a debug method - and extremely irritating!

    Next steps
    1. Do another ride
    2. Save the TCX file
    3. Backup the TCX file
    4. Disconnect the device before I go anywhere near Garmin Connect
    5. Reload Training Center to ensure the file hasn't been corrupted (this is the part that will be telling - it stands to reason that something (corruption) is happening at this step - especially since the saved TCX was missing the data that I was looking at - but... I just don't get it!)
    6. If by some miracle the data is not missing - then I'll go to Garmin Connect and try to upload...

    This is really badness!

Data Went Away Again - and here's some visual proof!

Well - fortunately for me - this time the data on the device was still intact.

Attached are two screen clippings; one taken from training center (With-Data), one taken from Garmin Connect (same TCX file) where the data mysteriously disappeard...

At least now I have some visual evidence of the problem...
