How avg vigorous minutes for last 4 weeks are calculated?

Hi!

How exactly are vigorous minutes for last 4 weeks under Health Stats -> Fitness Age calculated?

Intensity minutes section shows my activity for last 4 weeks:

13 vigorous minutes average per day, which should result in  13*7 = 91 vigorous minutes on average per week.

And on average 3 vigorous days per week (~30min running every time)

Yet Fitness Age section shows completely different average stats for last 4 weeks:

60,1 min per week (instead of 91) and 2,3 vigorous days per week (instead of 3).

Are there two different algorithms used? If so, how can i plan and monitor my exercise progress for fitness age reduction if it is not transparent?

P.S. First time here on forums. Wanted to say thank you for this product (watch and software), as it motivated me a lot to increase and balance my overall physical activity!

  • Mine is exactly the same... 4 week total divided by 6 :/

  • Same here, my 4w average matches a division by 6 (not 4, as it should).

Whether or not there's a 5 min threshold for counting fitness days, this issue is very confusing, non-transparent and simply incorrect - it should definitely be classified as a bug.

  • Is there a way to raise this with Garmin?

You could contact them at [email protected] or https://support.garmin.com/

  • The division by 6 is exactly right for me too. My total for last 4 weeks is 358 (111 + 129 + 78 + 40). 358 divided by 6 is 59.6, which is what Garmin is telling me.

Interestingly, it now even says that’s my 6 week average on the first page but in the ‘help text’ it still refers to the last 4 weeks

Hopefully, someone from Garmin is monitoring these forums and will fix it pronto!

    RECOMMENDATIONS

    Increase Vigorous Minutes

6w avg: 59.6 min per week

  • I meant to add for last 6 weeks my total is 564 minutes (111 + 129 + 78 + 40 + 132 + 74) . But 564 divided by 6 is 94!

So, the Garmin algorithm says 6 week average on the first page but takes the last 4 weeks and divides it by 6. While on the ‘Help’ page it still says 4 week average.

If someone is moderating this forum, can they not also highlight this to the Garmin developers? Surely it should be a quick fix.

PS: I’m using an Instinct Solar 2.

The staff peeks in here, in the apps section, extremely rarely.  And the volunteer moderators do not have any other contacts to Garmin's developers or to the Support staff than any other user. You better report it to the Support directly yourself.

  • Thank you Trux. I have reported to Garmin support and will post their response once it is fixed.

  • I tried to report the same problem and didn't get anything helpful. Please keep us posted. I started getting frustrated when my behavior hasn't changed in the past month or so but my fitness age started getting worse for no reason. and when the recommendation was to increase intensity minutes to a level that I'm already meeting, I was irked!!

  • I heard back from Andrew from Garmin Product Support as follows:

"This seems to be an error and these values should match up. In the next update to fitness age, this should be resolved. I don't have an exact timeline for this but it is pending implementation."

Hopefully, this will be fixed very soon. I enrolled on the Beta Program, but this bug fix is not there.

I will update here when the fix is rolled out.
