Garmin Connect altitude differs from GPS record

Just did an easy bike path century ... quite flat ... Edge 705 reported 961 ft of altitude gain through the Garmin Training Center history. Garmin Connect reported 876 ft of gain (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/11516099).

Heading out for 500 miles in Oregon/No. Ca. ... hoped Connect would provide a good historical record for the upcoming ride but now wondering where the altitude value comes from if not the GPS itself.

What other data in connect, if any, is drawn from sources other that the ride history?

The 705 has an onboard barometric altimeter. The GC website matches the sample points' locations in your tcx record with the elevation data in their database. They will be different. On a separate note, I have seen huge disparities (40+%) between different sites with the same tcx because they have different elevation databases that have different levels of fineness in their data. Total elevation gain is a funny statistic, and it is prone to error.
