MotionBased better than Garmin Connect

I have used Garmin connect for a few weeks now. I used to use MotionBased. I made the change because MotionBased would no longer accept Garmin fitness device uploads. I am happy with my Garmin device. I was excited to see what unique features the Garmin connect web site had in store and was very disappointed.

Why would Garmin force us to move to the Garmin Connect website? Are they looking for more control over their user population? Why couldn't they provide a comparable experience to MotionBased?

I believe this is an effort by a group of corporate nobody's that work for Garmin. I assume they don't even ride. If they did they wouldn't be putting us through this. MotionBased is much better and it is upsetting to see a decent product vendor make a mis-step like this.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a comparable device to the Garmin 305? I am willing to put the 305 on the scrap heap for something else that works for biking and running.

BTW, Let's get Christian Vande Velde another sponsor!

Thanks,
David

While I miss the features of MB, I am quite happy with my Garmin units. I have a good pick of applications to choose from to view my data.

Many of my friends don't even use post analysis software. They like the data on their wrist during their activity, make a note in their notebook and keep going. For some users, the computer software is superfluous.

Not to say that I don't pore over my data like a geek. I do. And I do miss some features of MB and am waiting for GC to "catch up." But it sure doesn't keep me from enjoying my units and recommending them to friends.

I too have been very disappointed with the new Garmin Connect. Yes it’s slow, and doesn’t have the features of Motionbased. Actually it’s just about useless for me. As a cyclist I would compare my “Total Time” vs. “Moving Time” for a particular ride in order to measure my improvements, or lack of over period of time. This feature is no longer available in the new Garmin Connect. Although I have been told that it is on the list for new upgrades.

My 2 cents are that the Garmin folks should have held off on the forced migration to Garmin Connect until the UI (user interface / feature set) of the new Garmin Connect was at least equal to the old version. Or they should have made the migration optional.

From reading through the blog, it appears as the main purpose of this new Garmin Connect release was to improve the infrastructure rather than the feature set. I still have high hopes for Garmin, they do still manufacture the best devices but I’ll be switching over to SportTracks for the software experience, at least for now. And when my Forerunner 301 dies I now will now be looking at other options.

The software experience is just as important, if not more important than the hardware. If you can't use the data collected during your workout what good is the device used to collect it?

  • Design vs features

Seems like the design has been more important than the features. Garmin Connect looks great, but it's a bit slow and - as mentioned - there are a lot of MotionBased features missing.

I hope Garmin recognizes this and improves both the speed and the features before people move away to other services..

I love my Garmin and hate Garmin Connect. GC is inferior to Motion Based in almost every capacity. It is so disappointing. I miss Motion Based and want it back; it was worth the annual fee.
  • Bring back Motion Based! Do you agree?

I’m a reluctant user of Garmin Connect having been a Motion Based subscriber for the past two years. Is if just me or does Garmin Connect miss key functionality that was available in Motion Based that should be provided by Connect before the forced migration? Do you agree?

The key missing items for me are:

    1) Can’t combine activities

    2) New activities do not list the location; making it very hard to name your activity as you need to recall based on time, date etc not LOCATION

If you agree do you want to start a “Bring Back Motion Based” movement until Garmin Connect is fit for purpose?

  • Not going to happen.
They have shifted and no amount of complaints are going to deter them.

Use the map and search activities and find yours. Zoom to where it started and then narrow the search.

    Best way for now.

Not gonna happen - it's way past the time to move on. I'm loading data into Garmin Connect just so it's there, but I've moved on to far superior products.

It's a shame, but I'm hopeful this is one step back before they take 2-3 forward.

    Not using GC.

Have you tried Ascent? Less than 1/5 of my rides are transferred to GC and it doesn't happen manually. There is no weather data. I am seriously considering putting my 705 on ebay. My iphone tells me where I am/was and Cycleops is coming out with a better power monitor. I don't use GC. Its worthless.

While you're waiting for GC to be worthwhile, try SportTracks. Not perfect, but way ahead of GC.
