Equipment tracker

I continue to track gear by entering shoe information in the description field of my GC activities. When gear tracking becomes a part of GC (see quote below), at least I'll be ready.

Yup, gear tracking is a planned enhancement.
  • Its been requested by loads of people over 5 years and still no gear tracking. I'm starting to think this feature request section is pointless. Sorry to be so negative but come on Garmin...!

I notice that from today, my Garmin Connect account has a "Gear" section that allows you to set up all your equipment - shoes, bikes, other - however, there is no link yet to activities. When setting up you can allocate an activity to gear but that means all running will go to one pair or shoes or all cycling to one bike. Assume more is on the way.

I entered my three bikes, but can only assign one of them to all Cycling. Need to be able to toggle between them like you can on the Garmin Edge. Also it prompts you for "Maximum Distance" -- no explanation of what this means -- Max distance I have traveled, or want to travel? I log my Odometer readings on each bike, so I entered the Odo of my brand new Boardman, 328 miles. Now the Gear widget displays "0% of 328" for that bike. Confused.

It's the distance you want to travel

I'm not a cyclist, but I think that feature is meant for running shoes, as most shoes wear out by 300-500 miles and it's generally a good idea to track how much you've run in them so you know when their life-span is coming to an end and you need to replace them.

Patience is rewarded. It only took five and a half years to become reality...

Seriously, thank you for adding this feature Garmin!

Now if only the Forerunner teams will put back the "footpod as the speed-source" capability into the 920xt and 620 that existed in the 910xt/610...
  • Finally... after 5+ years - thank you! Now if you could just add mileage to the shoes you are adding and not include "all activities since"...

When you add more than one pair of shoes/bike, you can select which pair/bike you used on your main page by using the little shoe/bike button.
  • How many miles?

The new gear tracker shows me that I have used my shoes for 88 activities. Not useful. I want to easily see the total miles. I could not find that from the gear page.

    Edit in --

Ah, if you use a "maxi" panel and select a specific gear item -- there's the mileage.

If you use a mini-panel, and click to the sub page -- no mileage.

Maybe too modern for me ...

    Thanks Kagan.Ilya.
  • Garmin -
Thanks for finally adding the gear tracker!
    It's implementation is almost perfect.
The only change would be to have 2 fields when you enter new gear.
    1) Current miles / km on the gear
    2) When to get a notification for the gear to expire

This is only an issue if the user is new to Garmin or for all of us just getting the feature now when we already have 200 miles on our shoes.

But, other than that, the implementation is great! I love how easy it is to add gear to a workout and track. That part is the best implementation I have used on any fitness site

    Cheers,
    Tom
