It would be nice if when you went to the explore tab that your home location could be set to the default opposed to San Francisco. The last explored location would be great as well.
When going into Explore, the system should recognize by Device (or preset Destination Setting w/in Profile) where I live and therefore it should pull up Tennessee (versus San Fran).

This has been mentioned several times, so you are not alone.
The feature was in the last release but pulled last minute due to the way it assigned locations for certain countries. But the UI components for the feature were not removed. It's back in the next major release scheduled for late August to early September and a bulk process will be run to assign locations to the existing activities.
Explore should be taking you to different locations other than San Francisco. We know, it's a great city but not the center of the universe! I'm already enjoying seeing what other GC users around the world are up to.
