Both Average Speed and Average Pace as columns on the Activities page

Where is the "average pace" column located at the GC activities page?

I can find the "average speed" column, but no "average pace" column as is shown on both Motion Based, and Training Center.

Currently, it appears whoever created the "average speed" column is also attempting to convince us that the average pace the same thing as an average speed by combining the two items into one column? What am I missing? They are two different items completely, but there appears to be no average pace column anywhere on the activities page.

What's up with that? How do you show both "average speed" and "average pace" correctly on the activities page?
  • You've missed my point once again.

If I run a 10k or a marathon, or I'm riding loops at a particular mountain bike course. I want to know my average speed, and my average pace. As most people do.

Speaking for myself, when I run, I don't care what my speed is, and when I bike, I don't care what my pace is. And among the fellow athletes that I know, I think they feel the same way.

I've never heard anyone describe a person running 5 minute miles refer to the runner as running 12 miles per hour. I've never heard of anyone describe a cyclist riding at 20 mph say that the cyclist is doing 3 minute miles.

Huh... So why do you think it was important enough for both the people who created Garmin's Training Center software, and Garmin's Motion Based website, to have included both "average speed" and "average pace" columns at their respective locations? (Not to mention the competitors websites and software locations also showing speed and pace info simultaneously, I.E. "training peaks" and "sports tracks".)

I'm going to guess it was because they knew customers would want that kind of info.

Again, adding the extra column at the GC activities page to also show "average pace", is a no brainer, and takes how much time or money to add that, so for those interested the data is available?

Leo, I understand your request and I agree. At the very least I want to be able to see speed for my running activities. Running is not my primary sport and, while I enjoy running, I do not think well in pace. I'm getting a little better, but to even understand pace, I have to translate it to speed.

Right now, I have to set my running activities as "Other" so I can see the speed instead of pace. So I guess that's my work-around for my issue.

I understand you want to see both and that's cool.

I don't think it's a matter of the ability to do such, but that this was specifically this was changed for Garmin Connect. Perhaps the decision makers didn't realize what an important feature this was to some.

The best thing to do is post a respectful request to http://connect.garmin.com/help citing the reasons you want this feature. Perhaps it'll be reconsidered to be added back in.

Maybe because it's simpler to display both without having a check in the code to determine which kind of activity it is. I think in this case GC put a little thought into how they display the speed or pace and tried to give us what they thought would be most useful. They didn't leave out the information you want because they were lazy or sloppy, as you imply. Personally, I like how they did it, but YMMV.

Thanks April, SAEEDI, and Seilogramp for the link and info.

I have submitted an email at that link with my request, etc.

I assumed :D that the new GC activites page would have at a minimum "matched" the available data I've become accustomed to when using Training Center, and the Motion Based website over the last four years.

It can't be too difficult to now add the separate "average pace" column, albeit more difficult now than if someone had been thinking when the GC website was first created. They had a great template to follow for the inclusion of relevant data, with both Training Center and Motion Based. How'd someone screw that one up?

Now it means I have to open both Training Center and GC to see the data I want, making life more complcated, not less.

    Bummer

    Hello DW152,

Currently, you can't see both, as your post states. You are apparently not familiar with Training Center, Motion Based, Sports Track, or Training Peaks. All these websites, and/or training analysis programs list seperate columns for "average speed" and "average pace".

It has nothing at all to do with "what kind" of activity is being uploaded. Every activity can very simply be broken into separate "average speed" and an "average pace" columns......nothing to do with whether you are riding a bike, hiking, running, horsebackriding, or in a triathlon, etc.... No complicated algorithms needed, basic math.

Again, as it has been done with many other websites/programs.

It's just disappointing that the "new" is actually "less" informative than the previous.

Now, at GC, you can't see both the "average speed" and "average pace" for any of the activities one may upload. You have to open yet another program to get that info, making things more complicated, not less.

Leothefirst - Thanks for your persistence. I agree with you, there should be two columns available, one for pace and one for speed. They are two different measurements and both are useful. It is clear the the garmin developers have no clue about how users will use the information. Its a shame we have to move backwards from the capabilities that motionbased provided. I can only hope that one of these days they realize how they messed up and will get some knowledgable people to improve this site.
  • I've moved this thread to the feature request area where it will hopefully serve more use.

How about "Average Pace" & "Average Speed" columns?

    Thanks Anthony,

My post started off as a question, I.E. the FAQ area is where I first posted my question regarding "where is the average pace and average speed colomn at GC?"

Any idea how long an email response takes from Garmin? I had emailed to the link April and Steve had provided me?

You may not receive a direct response for a feature request, but rest assured it will be categorized and get to the right people. Whether or not it will be implemented probably wouldn't be communicated right away.
