I want to create a workout like "long run" that would last as long as I want and record mile splits until I stop the workout, however long that is. Just having a repeat of 1-mile steps doesn't do it because the number of steps must be specified.

Just use the auto lap feature on your Run activity. No need to create a running workout.
For example, on recent Forerunners:
- open Run activity
- hold UP for the menu
- select Run Settings
- Select Laps
- Set Auto Lap to By Distance
- Set Auto Distance to 1 mile
- Optionally customize the Lap Alert settings to change the 2 metrics on the lap alert page that's displayed every time a lap is fired (whether it's an auto lap or manual lap)
There should be a similar procedure for whatever watch you have (check the manual if you can't find the auto lap settings.)
Thanks! I didn't find that in the manual, but figured there must be a way.
