    orienteering,,, older in teering

Actually, the 305 being a "lap" oriented device is not so well suited for running trails or like orienteering running all around looking for things. Perhaps Garmin could sell (lots) of the 305's to guys like me that need exercise, but hate gyms. The virtual partner is very close to that. The idea of downloading a track to a device is good, but the social network aspects are not good. Buff young athletes are not likely to be on the same site with retirees trying to reclaim their bodies after years of abuse by the marketplace.

I have a replacement 305. tracks with heart rate info serve a useful purpose for geezers considering which trails are within their capability. The GPS community is not oriented to this group, which would benefit from non speed orienteering activities.

[Shrug] Everyone thinks differently. There are a whole lot of activity choices now. What's one more entry? Ideally, we should be able to edit this list to fit our personalneeds. Then we could add or remove entries as we choose.

To me, jogging is slow running. Say 10-15 minutes/mile.

That's a great idea. Guess it would be up to the programmers to figure out how that's done without munging up the database.
  • Forerunner 305 and Orienteering

CACTUSMITCH, thanks for your reply. I mostly agree with your post, but respectfully disagree with your opinion that the 305 does not lend itself to orienteering. The distances between orienteering controls are just like laps, even though they are not of consistent length. During an orienteering event, racers can compare their routes as well as their splits. In a sport like orienteering, route choice frequently trumps the physical fitness of the runner. Thus, a device like the Forerunner 305, tracking both the route and the splits is ideal. Take a look at the splits analysis from a recent orienteering event. In the left frame you see a link to RouteGadget, where orienteerers can enter their routes manually. If you use the Forerunner 305 only to track your lap splits (assuming that your laps are all identical), which can just as well be achieved with a regular fitness watch/heart-monitor combination. As for the Social Networking aspect, it is up to the Garmin Connect programmers and administrators to create a service that is attractive enough to lure in additional orienteerers (or runners, horseback riders, cyclists ...) and sell additional devices. Happy trails!

It's not rocket science. Many programs have this functionality. Since this is a web program, they would have to keep the custom table somewhere, possibly in the users profile area.

My suggestion for new activities (that moves from point A to B):

    Skydiving
    - Wingsuit
    - Canopy Piloting
    - Swooping
    - Freefly
    - Canopy Relative Work

    New activities?

I would like following new activities:

    - Orienteering (Under running or other)
    - "Forrest running" - there is probably some better word for this in English?? (under running)

I think many users in the nordic coutries would need these activities.

    Is this not Trail Running?

Well, my English is not perfect, but for example in orienteering the running can be 95 % without any kind of path. When we do physical training for orienteering (without map), we are often running in forrest outside the paths (or trails?). It is very different from running on paths. Have I understood the word trail wrong?

No, I think you understand trail. Running through the forest without a path might be called bushwhacking. I don't do orienteering, so I'm not familiar with the term "forest running."
