There is no category for the forums that I can find, so here it is in the water cooler section.

Sometimes it is hard to get used to a new interface simply because it is new. However, one thing that I immediately don't like about the new forum interface is the lower information density due to the window dressing and some questionable choices for laying out the pages.

Specifically, on the old site, the 25 most threads were very compactly shown on a single page. Each line item contained the forum, subject, author, and date. On the new site, probably 10-12 items could fit in the same space because there is now a very "puffy" layout. The row for each thread, instead of being a single line of text, consists of a divider, padding, two rows of text (e.g., putting author beneath the subject line instead of adjacent on the same line) and more padding.

Perhaps someone thinks this is more readable since it isn't so crowded, but in fact it is the opposite. I have to do a lot more scrolling and clicking to review the same amount of information.

It is similar to the complains about the GC site itself -- superficially pretty, but actually contains a lot less information than the older scheme.

I hope this message is received as constructive criticism, and not whining.

    BTW, preview now works properly

On the previous post, I intentionally hit preview before submitting. In the old forum, doing so would often insert spurious "?" characters where there were double spaces and such. The new forum doesn't suffer this problem. Kudos!

I have the same objections as you. In short: much too much dead space, loads of scrolling. Bad.

The MB forums were powered by SMF. The new forums are powered by vBulletin.

I don't know what options are available for the entire site, but some of the differences you will see are simply the difference between the forum engines.

I will point out that Garmin did not write vBulletin. ;)

Posting in the water cooler is a fine place to do it as these questions will likely dwindle as we get more comfortable with the change.

  • Like you said, it is hard because it is new. Difficult to know if this is really an issue or is it just me getting used to a new home.;) I'm withholding judgment until I am familiar with things.
  • I found it funny to see people like "SEILOGRAMP " as Junior's.

For new people, it was nice to have a feel regarding the level of experience people had when they replied to newcomers posts.

This new forum is different from motionbased forum , but I am subscribing to other forums using the same "client". It is just a matter of getting used to it.

I'm sure this will quickly sort itself out. It is a bit of a change, though!

I also have other forums I'm on that use vBulletin. They have their good and bad points. Like most things.

    Low information density

Rereading what I wrote, I didn't make my intent clear. I agree some things are simply different and need time to become familiar. However, I was pointing out something which isn't just different (eew, a blue background instead of a brown background or whatever), but something which I think is a materially worse choice.

The information density is very low, which means a lot more scrolling around and clicking through to the next page. That is something that is always worse, even if you get used to it.

For instance, on MB I could do a search for activities according to some criteria and get back 20 hits on a page. With GC I get six. And in fact, those six show less information than before, so I have to click on each tab to get back some of that information. Tsk tsk.

The content of the old forum or at least part of it will be copied to the new forum. I'm not sure if a matching of the old and new user names will work, specially because the user names are not the same for all. If it doesn't work, I'll try to view the new forum as a fountain of youth.;)

There are a few settings in the Edit Options portion of the User Control Panel to remove signatures and avatars and change the view of the threads. Will help some with the clutter while reading a thread, but maybe not as much as you'd prefer and doesn't address the other issues you mentioned.

Unfortunately, I don't think one solution will please all. There might be some browser level tweaks you can do, though. Maybe a FireFox add-on or something.

  • Familiarity won't make the dead space and the excessive scrolling go away.
