Garmin Connect Upload Issues

Former Member
Former Member
My activities were migrated successfully from Motionbased to Garmin Connect, but now when I try to upload new activities from my Forerunner 305, it tries to upload them all again. This results in mass duplicates. Can anyone advise how to prevent this? I cancelled as soon as I realized, but still had to delete 20+ individual duplicates.

Also, locations don't show.

Any advice appreciated. Anxious to use Connect, but pretty frustrated.

Same problem here. Almost 4 years of flawless TC and MotionBased tracking. Can't go back to the old system so we have to wait until Garmin gets it right. Nice that I can cancel my account via American Express at any time which is now.

If you click on upload from a list, you should be able to pick and choose which ones you want uploaded. Also, it's a good idea (IMO) to delete old history, not only for this reason, but to keep errors from occurring on the device.

Locations are disabled right now. This is planned for a future release of GC

Would like to know my feedback's getting considered

So I'm an IT guy and what I'm hearing is the new app's just not ready for production. Selecting individual activities would be fine except that ALL my activities are "checked" for upload and I'd have to uncheck all 180+ in order to upload the new. That's just not acceptable from a quality perspective.

I'd like to get my input to whomever's driving the decision to shut-dow Motionbased. At a minium you guys need to keep the old app up until the new one is useable.

I'm a big fan of Garmin, but if you screw with my ability to get the full functionality from my Garmin device, you've lost a customer.

At least fix some of the more significant defects (ability to delete multiple activities at once, add locations and activity names, etc.) before you decommision the app that actually works. Thanks.
  • Just a thought but couldn't you just create a new garmin connect account and dump the old one? If all your activities are stored in your 305 then you won't lose anything. Although I agree with Seilogramp - I never have more than a week or two of data in my edge 305 - mine is stored in training centre and connect. Why do you keep your data in the forerunner?
  • oops! terrible typing mistake there sorry!
Also meant to add that I sympathise with your concerns about connect but the reports for example are much better (IMO) than MB, the interface is cleaner and I certainly have less upload issues than I used to with MB.

You do have the ability to edit your own posts. I'm doing it all the time. Too quick on the draw, I guess.:(

Actually, there is only summary data in the Forerunner for most of those activities. Only the latest activities will have track point (bread crumb) data associated with them as the Forerunner only has so much room for track points. So he would be losing the data that's stored at MB.

A tedious possibility is to create a new MyGarmin account and upload the data from Training Center (or from an export out of MB). But those are not ideal.

I certainly agree that there is some functionality missing from Garmin Connect and I'm waiting like everybody else for the functionality to be implemented.

I had some issues last night uploading. But I was uploading 107 activities. 33 made it to GC. Not sure if my internet connection burped or GC decided it had enough from me for one session. ;) I'll have to try again tonight.

The ability to uncheck (or check) all would seem a basic feature so not sure why it wasn't in the initial release but this oversight was mentioned in the MB forum and one of the developers suggested that this feature was coming.

Once an activity has been imported into GC it gets tagged as such and on subsequent uploads those activity boxes shouldn't be ticked. At least that's the way it should work. Bit of a problem though in that GC has already imported your activities, does not yet have bulk delete should you go ahead and reimport them and you've got so many activities in your device history to start with.

Would think the simplest solution would be to clear out the history on your device (the older data is just summary data anthow) and start uploading to GC with a fresh device. Subsequent uploads then wouldn't require you to untick anything.

GC doesn't check for duplicates. I had mistakenly copied a TCX file into the history folder of my Edge 705 and this file was uploaded twice (in different sessions). GC should build a checksum like a CRC over a normalized version of the activity and save it in a no-dup key field. This would avoid duplicates with very high probability.
